Council holds nuisance hearing for Hanson properties

The Clarion City Council meeting on Tuesday, January 18 began with a nuisance hearing regarding three properties owned by Che Hanson. The properties in question are 1407, 1413 and 1501 Central Ave E. The purpose of the hearing was for the council to decide if the properties should indeed be declared as nuisances and what timeframe to give the owner to rectify the violations.

Council holds organizational meeting, talks parking

At the first meeting of the year on Tuesday, January 4, the Clarion City Council looked like a small group. New mayor Rod Heiden was ill and joining by phone, as was councilmember Shayne Hennigar. Dan Hennigar was also not present. Mayor pro-tem Andy Young ran the meeting. New members Nick McOllough and Dave Flurer were behind the council table for the first time.

Multiple catalytic converter thefts reported in Clarion

In the last few weeks, there have been two reports of catalytic converters being stolen around Clarion off of three vehicles.

Clarion Chief of Police Steve TerHark said the thefts likely took place between Christmas and New Years. It is hard to pinpoint the dates precisely though as some of the vehicles had been sitting and had not been moved for a while.

USDA Rural Development Director visits Clarion to discuss new water treatment plant

Last week, the newly appointed USDA Rural Development State Director, Theresa Greenfield, visited Clarion to share some exciting news about city infrastructure. Clarion will receive a $8.1 million low interest loan through the USDA’s Water and Waste Disposal Loans and Grant Program.

As has been discussed at many Clarion City Council meetings, this money will be used for the city’s new water treatment facility. Portions of it will also be used to make improvements to an existing well and install a new roof and provide a heater for the pump house.

Clarion council hears about plans to acquire space for childcare

At the Clarion City Council meeting on Tuesday, December 21, City Administrator Clint Middleton shared a piece of good news for Clarion’s childcare situation. He and city attorney Zach Chizek have been working with Mosaic to acquire that building in a cost-effective manner. After much discussion with their counsel and corporate offices, it was agreed that the city will be able to lease the Mosaic building for 10 years at a cost of $1 per year. The building is located on Madison Avenue north of the grocery store.

Clarion’s candidates for mayor answer questions

There are two candidates running for Clarion mayor in the upcoming election on November 2. Incumbent mayor Duane Asbe is not running for reelection. The Monitor invited candidates Rod Heiden and Shayne Hennigar to answer a few questions ahead of the election. Their responses are reproduced below in their entirety with little to no editing.

Council approves second readings of property and inspection ordinances

The Clarion City Council held a brief meeting last Tuesday, October 5. The meeting began with Peggy O’Neill from the Clarion Good Neighbor Association reporting on a successful clean up the previous weekend. She thanked the city and various businesses for helping out, including the CGD football team on Saturday.

AARP grants pocket park funds

Last week, representatives from AARP stopped by Clarion to present funds for the Pocket Park that will soon be underway on the 100 block of Central Avenue.

Council approves hire of code enforcement officer

As they discussed at the last meeting, the Clarion City Council formally approved a resolution to hire a code enforcement officer at their meeting on Tuesday, September 21. The job will go to Lisa Kist, who has held a similar position in Eagle Grove. Kist will start out part-time as a city employee with a six-month probation period.

Two running for Clarion mayor, 6 for 3 council seats

According to paperwork certified late last week by the Wright County Auditor, the candidates running for various local offices in the November 2 election have been received.

For Clarion’s mayor position, incumbent Duane Asbe will not be running for reelection. Two men have thrown their hat in the ring, however. Mayoral candidates will be Rodney Heiden and Shayne Hennigar.
