City reminds residents of available leak and water line protection

When temperatures drop well below zero, like they have in the last few weeks, cracked or broken water lines can become a concern. No one wants to pay to repair or replace pipes. With that in mind, the City of Clarion reminds water customers that there is an insurance program available to them right on their water bill.

City council approves eight resolutions

In their meeting on Tuesday, January 19, the Clarion City Council approved several resolutions pertaining to various city projects.

For the well project, resolutions approving a pay request for $6,919, along with a small change order with Thompson Electric Company were passed. Two more resolutions were okayed paying Peterson Construction $20,273 along with a small change order for other well project work.

New Chamber Director excited to be back in the area

There’s a new smiling face in the Depot on Main Street in Clarion. Lydia Schroeder just started as the new Chamber Director, but she is already looking forward to having a big impact on the organization.

Schroeder spent her formative years in Clarion. She graduated from Clarion-Goldfield-Dows High School in 2016. Her parents Rod and Shannon run Wright Choice Chiropractic in town.

Clarion council holds first meeting of year

In their first meeting of the year on Tuesday, January 5, the Clarion City Council approved two resolutions as preliminary steps toward the spec building project. As previously reported, Daybreak Foods is in the process of acquiring the building at 225 Nelson Ave. and some surrounding property in the Clarion Industrial Park area. The resolutions approved allow the city to enter into 0% interest loans of $100,000 each with Prairie Energy and Corn Belt Cooperatives if and when development at the spec building and surrounding area happens.

Daybreak Foods moving towards acquiring Clarion Spec Building

At the Clarion City Council Meeting held Tuesday, December 16, Todd Foss with Prairie Energy introduced Mike Meissen, Vice President of the Iowa Area Development Group (IADG), to the council. According to their website, IADG provides business support on behalf of nearly 250 Iowa electric and telecommunications utilities. Confidential services include available site and building identification, and financial incentives. This group has been working on the Clarion Spec Building acquisition which is now moving forward rapidly.

City council talks water payment plans

In the Tuesday, December 2 meeting of the Clarion City Council, there were only three agenda items. A resolution to set a date for a public hearing on an urban renewal plan was a repeat of one that had occurred at the last council meeting. This resolution put the city in place to proceed with the sale of the spec building located in the Clarion Industrial Park. City Administrator Clint Middleton explained a meeting needs to take place with some stakeholders who will potentially receive TIF moneys should the sale happen.

Clarion Police Department receives grant for technology

Most people have heard of the actor Gary Sinise. Many of us know him as ‘Lieutenant Dan’ from Forrest Gump or would recognize his face from his time on one of the many CSI television show iterations. Perhaps lesser known are his philanthropic efforts through the Gary Sinise Foundation. It is thanks to this foundation that the Clarion Police Department recently got a technology upgrade.

Kits for Kids donated to Clarion Police

The Clarion Police and Ambulance received 10 kits from the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation to help with policing efforts. Henry’s Heroes Law Enforcement Comfort Kits allow law enforcement officers to provide comforting items to children in distress. Compact in design, the kits are designed to be portable and easily tossed into an officer’s cruiser as part of their standard equipment. “The Clarion Police Department is excited to receive Henry’s Heroes Comfort Kits,” said Jennifer Littlejohn, Office Manager & Ambulance Director (pictured).

After learning about something unfortunate that happened to a Hampton business owner this past summer, the Clarion Chamber has recently worked to make their members aware of some little known rules. These rules are regarding Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility on business’s websites.
