Duane Asbe honored at state fair as 4-H Alum of the Day

Locally, folks know Duane Asbe for many reasons. He’s the mayor of Clarion and works with the Wright County Charitable Foundation as well as with the Iowa Specialty Hospitals Foundation. He has been very involved in the community for the last several decades. But most people might not know that Asbe was an avid 4-Her many years ago and continued to stay active in that organization over the years. Because of his contribution to 4-H and beyond, Asbe was recently honored as a 4-H Alum of the Day by the Iowa 4-H Foundation at the Iowa State Fair. 

JJ’s Outlet offers something for everyone

Imagine being able to go into one place and purchase fishing gear and nightcrawlers, handmade jewelry, plants and electronics. That’s what a new store on Clarion’s bustling Central Avenue is now offering. JJ’s Outlet just opened last week at 108 Central Ave E and is offering a variety of interesting products.

 The new store is owned by Janelle Basinger and her husband Scott Field, along with Janelle’s son Jesse Basinger. The idea to open a place in town has been rolling around their heads for a while, said Janelle and Jesse.

Answering God’s call in a hospital

When one is sick in the hospital, we know that doctors and nurses are important caregivers that people depend on. Beyond that though, patients’ mental and spiritual care also is a huge factor while in a medical setting. Recently, a local pastor has been working to grow that type of care as he works to become a certified hospital chaplain. 

Rep. Feenstra makes stop in Eagle Grove

Rep. Randy Feenstra (Iowa’s 4th District) made a stop in Eagle Grove at Lewright Meats on Friday, August 27, as part of his 39 County Tour. He has made a commitment to visit these counties at least twice each year.

In meeting with Ethan Bubeck, owner of Lewright Meats, Feenstra was interested in a variety of topics including, but not limited to, employee count and whether or not he had trouble finding the help he needs, their partnership with Prestage Foods of Iowa, the effects of COVID, and of course, processing and processing availability.

Dows Methodist Church celebrating 150 years

Dows United Methodist Church will be celebrating 150 years of service this year. Please join us on September 12th at 8:30 AM for a continental breakfast and time of fellowship. The 10 o’clock service will be given by Reverend Kalen Fristad celebrating the milestones.

North Central Iowa Research Farm to hold Fall Field Day

KANAWHA, Iowa – Learn about drought conditions, fall nutrient management, herbicide programs and carbon markets during the fall field day at the Iowa State University’s Northern Research and Demonstration Farm at Kanawha on Sept. 9.  

“Farmers and agribusiness staff will hear the latest on impacts of drought conditions on the 2021 crop, soil sampling, residual nitrogen and herbicide programs at the field day,” said Gentry Sorenson, field agronomist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.

Keller awarded IFAA scholarship at fair

Emma Keller of Clarion was awarded the $1,500 Russ Brannen/Kent Nutrition Group Memorial Beef Scholarship by the Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement (IFAA) during the Iowa State Fair Sale of Champions on Saturday August 21, 2021. Emma’s parents are Dave and Dawn Keller.

The IFAA established the Winner's Circle Scholarship Program in 1990 to provide incentives for college-bound youth seeking post-secondary education in an area of agriculture. Over $184,350 were awarded in scholarships to 98 youth this year by IFAA.

WC Public Health cautions people about unprescribed use of Ivermectin

This is a public health message regarding the risks of using Ivermectin without a prescription, or ingesting Ivermectin formulations that are meant for external use or Ivermectin-containing products formulated for veterinary use. Ivermectin is not an approved treatment or prevention for COVID-19 and is not prescribed for COVID-19. Ivermectin is only FDA approved for internal and external parasites or parasitic worms. Even the levels of Ivermectin for approved uses can interact with other medications like blood-thinners.

Ashley Olson

Ashley Olson is originally from Forest City. She is excited to start her first teaching experience as the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows 7th grade Reading/Language Arts teacher. Olson received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and Education and a minor in Theatre/Speech from Northwestern College in Orange City, IA in May of 2021.

Field of Dreams game was a dream come true for local fan

On Thursday, August 12, when Kevin Costner and members of the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox walked out of a cornfield near Dyersville, Iowa, almost six million people were watching on TV. Most of us probably got chills to see the iconic scene from the 1989 movie “Field of Dreams” re-created in real-life. For those lucky few at the baseball game, the scene was even more powerful. Joe Nelson, one of those spectators, called the event the best baseball experience of his life.
