Proposed redistricting maps reshape Iowa’s political landscape

Iowa’s first round of redistricting maps would create significant changes in the state’s congressional and legislative districts and potentially reset some 2022 campaigns.

The nonpartisan Legislative Services Agency presented new congressional and legislative maps to lawmakers Thursday, setting the ball rolling on a long-delayed redistricting process.

Editor’s Note- Under these plans, Wright County would still be in the 4th District, with no changes.

9/11 services held at Wright Freedom Rock

The September 11 Patriots’ Day Remembrance and Prayer Ceremony was held at the Wright County Freedom Rock, Dows, Iowa, on Saturday with over 110 in attendance. American Legion Post 523 Commander Bill Chambers welcomed the county residents. Post Chaplain Richard Echelberger gave the Fireman’s Prayer as the invocation. The ceremony included a brief description of the events of 9/11 and the number of firemen, police, emergency responders, military and civilians killed during the terrorist attacks.

Supervisors hear about pipeline inspection

At the weekly meeting of the Wright County Board of Supervisors, they listened to a presentation by Evan De Val of ISG Engineering about using the company as inspectors and a go-to resource for the Summit Carbon Solutions pipeline project. He explained that because liquified carbon dioxide is considered a hazardous material in the state of Iowa, inspection is required, which is the responsibility of the county. The inspection part involves updating landowners regarding anything being impacted by the pipeline, including drainage and soil issues.

School board hears from property restoration company

At the Monday night meeting of the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Board of Education, the group heard a presentation from First Onsite Property Restoration, a nationwide company that deals with emergency response planning and restoration. Superintendent Joe Nelson explained that the necessity for this service arose last year when the district considered what they would do in the case of a disaster like a derecho or a tornado. First Onsite can handle various aspects of a disaster from water, fire, and smoke damage to general contracting and reconstruction.

Council ok’s plan to move forward with rental inspections

At their meeting last Tuesday, September 7, the Clarion City Council discussed a plan to start rental inspections in Clarion and possibly pair that inspector position with a code enforcement position through the city. Middleton noted that the police department who has been short-staffed recently struggles to keep up with code enforcement, and rental inspections have been discussed in the past and are overdue. The council was agreeable to the idea.

Hazardous Material Pipeline planned

With a proposed pipeline project possible to stretch across dozens of Iowa counties, public meetings will be the first step as project backers move ahead on storing and capturing carbon.

Summit Carbon Solutions, LLC is currently working through the Iowa Utilities Board for the effort.

The Ames-based company formed last year and is looking at an investment of $4.5 billion with hundreds of permanent jobs resulting.

You may have seen a vehicle with Nebraska license plates slow-driving around Clarion a few week’s ago. This car likely belonged to two young University of Nebraska-Omaha students engaged in an interesting project.  Seth Varner and Austin Schneider have been on a quest the last five and a half months to visit all 939 of Iowa’s incorporated communities.

Tips for Harvesting Downed and Wind-Damaged Corn

With the recent storms rolling through northern Iowa, many growers are experiencing field conditions similar to those seen across the state after the 2020 derecho. To help ensure a safe and productive harvest, we’ve rounded up some tips and information that were developed after the derecho last fall for harvesting lodged and downed corn. While the damage from recent storms is not as widespread as last August’s derecho, some of the impacts to crops are very similar.
