Three students from the CGD Middle School Band have been selected to perform in the 2021 North Central Iowa Bandmasters Association (NCIBA) Middle School Honor Band. The Honor Band Festival will be on Saturday, November 13 in Algona. Students from all over North Central Iowa will gather to rehear

Absentee ballot requests may be filed for upcoming city/school election

Wright County voters interested in voting absentee for the November 2 City/School Election may file requests for absentee ballots with the Wright County Auditor’s Office.

Due to recent legislation, the time period to request absentee ballots has gone from 120 days to 70 days. The new legislation also has shortened the number of days that the Auditor’s Office may have ballots available for absentee voting. Voters now have 20 days to vote absentee either by mail or in-person rather than 29 days.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM), is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and cure. Throughout this month the Monitor will be highlighting different aspects of BCAM and issues related to breast cancer, new technologies related to detection and treatment options, fund raising, and more.

Sharing agriculture and ideas across borders

Folks from this area often say that Wright County, Iowa has some of the best farm ground in the world. Last week, an exciting event may have validated that opinion a bit. On Friday, a delegation from the country Kosovo, including the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development, Faton Peci, visited the county. And according to multiple accounts, the visit was a great success.

Baseball/softball complex finally under construction

Site work has officially begun at the new home for Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Baseball and Softball. According to Superintendent Joe Nelson, the hope is that Clarion Parks and Rec, CGD Golf and football teams will also utilize the synthetic Field Turf site. Carlyle is new Wright County Economic Development Director

There is a new face in the Wright County Economic Development office. But Darrel Steven Carlyle’s face is not new to our county. For the past nearly four years, he was Belmond’s City Manager. He began his duties as the county’s economic development director on September 10. (Carlyle prefers to be called Darrel Steven). He comes with a variety of experiences which will serve him and the county well in the future.

Eleven ton of beef carcasses lost in last week’s Lewright Meats smokehouse fire

As you first saw on the Eagle Grove Eagle website and Facebook pages last week, the Eagle Grove Fire Department was called to Lewright Meats on the 100 block of North Iowa Avenue at 9:23 a.m. on Wednesday morning, Sept. 22. Lewright Meats locker has been a staple of the Eagle Grove community since 1936. Wednesday morning, the original smokehouse started a fire that left the locker area severely damaged.

Supervisors hear about COVID vaccine booster doses

In her weekly update during Monday’s Wright County Board of Supervisors meeting, Sandy McGrath reported an increase of 55 COVID cases in the past week, moving the county up to a total of 2,262 cases. There have been 30 new cases in the under 39-year-old group and 25 in 40+. She noted that she is still seeing breakthrough positives in vaccinated individuals, mostly from people who live with others with positive cases. She encourages people to get tested if they suspect they’re ill and added that PCR tests are still the best and the most sensitive rather than rapid tests.

Council approves hire of code enforcement officer

As they discussed at the last meeting, the Clarion City Council formally approved a resolution to hire a code enforcement officer at their meeting on Tuesday, September 21. The job will go to Lisa Kist, who has held a similar position in Eagle Grove. Kist will start out part-time as a city employee with a six-month probation period.

Census 2020: Wright County, Clarion down

After what seems like months of delays, the results of the 2020 census are in, and overall, Wright County saw a slight decrease in population when compared to 10 years ago.
