CGD musicians honored at banquet

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Music Boosters were pleased to be able to hold their annual music award banquet again this year. The event took place at the Red Shed Event Center last Tuesday evening.

Both high school music instructors gave various acknowledgements and awards. Band direct Kent Wesselink recognized those students who participated in solo festival earlier this year. Freshmen through senior letter winners were also acknowledged.

Cowgirl golf season ends at 2A regional

The Cowgirls golf team finished fourth at a 2A regional hosted by them at Clarmond. Okoboji (Milford) took the team title with a 381 total. They were followed by: Iowa Falls-Alden 425, South Hamilton 438, C-G-D 446, Southeast Valley 469, South Central Calhoun 473, Emmetsburg 485 and Eagle Grove 506. Grace Butler of Okoboji was the individual champion with an 18-hole total of 84.

CGD competes well at this year’s State Meet

After being denied their State Track & Field Meet a year ago, the Cowgirls and Cowboys, and for that matter all the student-athletes statewide that were present, were glad to be back as even a very wet Thursday did little to dampen the enthusiasm of running on the big blue oval once again.

CGD Seniors say good-bye to elementary

After a break last year, the CGD seniors got to take their final walk through the halls of the elementary school and took a photo with younger students. The tradition started in May of 2018. According to Elementary Principal Tricia Rosendahl, the special event shows the elementary students how to Begin with the End in Mind since graduation seems so far away for our little ones. The walk also gives the seniors one last chance to walk through the hallways and see former teachers. Rosendahl added, “It is an opportunity for our staff to congratulate former students who we have taught.

Cowgirls send six events to Drake Stadium

The Cowgirl track & field team will be represented in six events at this week’s state meet following a 2A qualifier last Thursday at Hudson. Dike-New Hartford took the team title with 152 points, followed in the top five of 12 teams by Osage at 111, Iowa Falls-Alden at 80, Aplington-Parkersburg at 77 and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows at 68.

Cowboys qualify two events for state track

The Cowboy track & field team will be represented this week in Des Moines by Isaiah Nebbe in the 3200 and the shuttle hurdle relay team following 2A qualifying meet action at Hudson last Thursday.

Dike-New Hartford easily took the team title with 139.50 points. They were followed in the top five of 12 teams by Forest City with 98.50, Aplington-Parkersburg with 87, Central Springs with 76 and Iowa Falls-Alden with 68.50. The Cowboys were 10th with 29.50 points.

Cowgirl golfers fourth at NCC meet

Clear Lake claimed the girl’s team title at the NCC Tournament last Monday in Mason City. The Lions finished at 355 total strokes, followed by Humboldt at a 387, Iowa Falls-Alden at 400 and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows at 424. Nora Carlson of Humboldt was the individual champion with a 76.

Tessa Warnke posted a low of 103 to lead the Cowgirls, with Karina Torres, Sawyer Morrical and Nicole Waters all bunched up at 107. Delia Swanson shot a 115 and Lauren Brooks at 117 to round out the red & black scoring.

CGD retirees honored at ceremony

At the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Teacher Appreciation Gathering last Wednesday, three retirees were honored for nearly 100 years of combined service. The retirees this year included David Ackerman, Pat O’Brien and Denise Ulven.

CGD Middle School teacher honored as Golden Apple winner

Every year, a teacher at Clarion-Goldfield-Dows is honored for his or her outstanding work. In 2020, due to COVID, no recipient was chosen. Fortunately, this year, the practice started up again. And last week at the Teacher Appreciation Gathering, the 2021 Golden Apple recipient was named. Middle School English Language Learner (ELL) teacher Jenny Smith was presented with the award.

CGD students inducted into National Honor Society

The 2020-2021 Clarion-Goldfield-Dows National Honor Society Induction Ceremony was held in the CGDHS Library on Monday, May 3rd at 5:30pm. The induction ceremony featured keynote speaker, Dr. Andrew Odland, a candle lighting ceremony, chapter pledge and signing of the official chapter registry book. This year’s ceremony was performed by nine members of the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows chapter of the National Honor Society along with Mrs. Shannon Leist, chapter advisor.
