Baseball/softball complex finally under construction

Site work has officially begun at the new home for Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Baseball and Softball. According to Superintendent Joe Nelson, the hope is that Clarion Parks and Rec, CGD Golf and football teams will also utilize the synthetic Field Turf site. Cowgirls get more wins as calendar turns to October

At a tri-meet last Tuesday, the Cowgirl volleyball team defeated Pocahontas Area 25-13 and 25-16 and also conference foe Algona by scores of W25-20, L25-21 and W15-11. Versus the Indians, team serving was at 93.9 percent efficiency with Brooke Askelsen at 12 of 12 (four aces). Clarissa Hasty was 9 of 10 (two), Lexie Lane 8 of 8 (two), Karlee Lehman 7 of 7, Summer Traub 6 of 7 and Indy Johnson 4 of 5 (one).

Cowboys lose to Pocahontas Area

The Cowboys kept the game tight on the road at Pocahontas Area last Friday night, but in the end just didn’t have enough to stay with the Indians in a 24-17 loss, Preston Gardner hit Jaxon Carpenter on a pair of TD passes, the longest a 71-yard strike, but it just wasn’t quite enough to pull out the win.

Cross country team runs at Humboldt

After being postponed a day by weather issues, the Humboldt Invitational was held Tuesday at Sheldon Park. The girls varsity team title went to St. Edmond with 62 points, followed in the top five of 13 complete teams by Clear Lake with 74, Manson NW Webster with 119, Humboldt with 130 and Algona with 139. Moriah Knapp of Algona finished in 20:31.04 to take the race. The Cowgirls were 12th as a team.

One month into the school year, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Superintendent Joe Nelson answered some questions about COVID-19 and how this year has looked so far.

We’re one month into the school year. How has COVID-19 impacted absences in the buildings with staff and employees?

A: After one month of the school year, we have not seen an uptick in student absences, COVID related or not. Our student illnesses and absences are currently at the same rate that they were prior to COVID 19.

Cowgirls defeat Clear Lake, Eagle Grove

Last Tuesday in a home match, The Cowgirls defeated the Lions in NCC play 3-1 with set scores of: W25-10, L 25-19, W27-25 and W25-13. Team serving was at 89.9 percent, with Clarissa Hasty at 21 of 21 (three aces) and Summer Traub at 18 of 20 (three). Indy Johnson was 12 of 15, Karlee Lehman 10 of 10 (two), Brooke Askelsen 10 of 12 (two) and Lexie Lane 9 of 11 (one).

Cross country team visits Osage, C. Lake

(Editor’s note-In last week’s results from the Belmond-Klemme meet, Madison Ingebritson’s name was inadvertently left out. She finished in 58th place. Our sports reporter apologizes for the error).

The team competed at Osage on Tuesday, with Crestwood (Cresco) taking the girls team title followed by Newman Catholic and Nashua-Plainfield. The Cowgirls were ninth in the final standings.

School board hears from property restoration company

At the Monday night meeting of the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Board of Education, the group heard a presentation from First Onsite Property Restoration, a nationwide company that deals with emergency response planning and restoration. Superintendent Joe Nelson explained that the necessity for this service arose last year when the district considered what they would do in the case of a disaster like a derecho or a tornado. First Onsite can handle various aspects of a disaster from water, fire, and smoke damage to general contracting and reconstruction.
