Cowboys get first win of season 11-9 over H-D/CAL

The Cowboy baseball team was down 9-0 after the top of the third inning, and could have easily folded their tent at that point. But these guys wanted that first taste of victory and to give coach Nail his initial career win at the school he played for. To their credit, they rolled up their sleeves and went to work with a seven-run third and tacked on four more in the fifth for an 11-9 win.

School board passes funding resolution for building projects

At Monday’s Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Board of Education meeting, Matt Gillaspie of Piper Sandler joined the meeting briefly. He shared the bids received for the sale of approximately $6.324 million in school infrastructure sales, services and use tax revenue bonds. This funding will be used for the upcoming building projects. The winning bid was from Luana Savings Bank out of Des Moines at an interest rate of 1.6% with the final maturity date 2033 with the option to pay back at any time.

Cowgirls score more runs as they get ever closer to a win

It was a week in which Cowgirl Nation saw the team score 26 total runs. While it didn’t produce any wins, they were right in several of those games as they close in on putting it all together on the right night. This ever-improving team will rise up to catch someone sleeping on them just enough to get that first win for coach Terhark very soon now.

Cowboys come close in a 4-2 loss to St. Edmond

In a Friday home game, coach Ryan Nail came close to getting his first win as the Cowboys played competitively and had a chance at victory before falling 4-2 to visiting St. Edmond. The team got both runs in the third, with Preston Gardner, Mateo Martinez, Porter Chase and Kaleb King all reaching on base hits. Gardner and Martinez both crossed the dish and Chase was credited with an RBI. Chase, Mason Allen and Thane Jackson all took a free ride to first, while Martinez was hit by a pitch to advance. Damien Bjorklund reached on an error. Gardner, Chase and Allen all stole a bag.

Last Tuesday in Jewell, the Cowboy baseball team dropped a 16-0 game to South Hamilton. Preston Gardner smacked a double, with Porter Chase and Cael Chase reaching on singles for the only other connections. Damien Bjorklund and Nick Carpenter drew a walk each and Mason Allen was hit by a pitch to advance. Kaleb King reached on an error.

Cowgirls struggle to score runs in week two

As you read in last week’s story on coach Steve Terhark, “these girls want to win” he said. Following the action from the second week of the season, the ladies will simply have to manufacture more runs to make that possible. 

CGD TAG students collect 761 boxes of cereal for pantry

The last few days of school are always a flurry of fun activities. One new activity literally caused the halls of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Elementary to buzz with excitement last Monday. The sight of collapsing cereal boxes throughout the school halls may seem unusual but it was all in service to a great cause. The fun event led to 761 boxes of cereal being donated to the First Lutheran Food Pantry in Clarion.

Elementary principal rained on for reading!

The second to last day of school at Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Elementary was wet and wild! Principal Tricia Rosendahl got a little damp as a reward for her students being awesome readers. She explained, “Our overall building goal this year was to have students complete 1,500 units in our online literacy program called Lexia. The students met that goal with a couple months left in the school year, so we set the bar higher.

Steve Terhark is new Cowgirl coach, team plays first 2 games

According to Steve Terhark, becoming the Cowgirl softball head coach was “years in the making.”

“I’ve loved the game for years,” he said. “My daughters played when they were in high school. But the program wasn’t going in the direction I wanted to see.” He feels the girls have worked hard in practice, and that it has been a learning process for him the last few weeks. “Assistant coach Macoy (Rohrer) has been great, and Katrina has helped out as well.”

Former Cowboy player Ryan Nail now baseball coach

Ryan Nail accepted a job as the new PE teacher at C-G-D, and the head coaching position came with it. That was just fine with the former Cowboy athlete, as he brought plenty of experience with him. “I have been a baseball and softball coach for the past 15 years, so that was an additional bonus,” said Nail. He played for the Cowboys from 2002-06. Also back home in Clarion is his wife Jess (Rohrer), herself a former Cowgirl athlete. The couple has two children. They return after spending several years in Grundy Center.
