School Board volunteers celebrated in May

May is School Board Recognition Month, sponsored by the Iowa Association of School Boards to celebrate the contributions of board members to Iowa public education. This year’s theme is “School Boards: Leading Through Uncharted Waters.” The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Community School District is celebrating the work of our school board, who has maintained their commitment to students, schools, and communities while facing challenges and making decisions they never could have anticipated when they were elected.

Cowboy golfers continue strong early play

In a tri-meet last Friday at Clarmond, the Cowboys took a win over both Iowa Falls-Alden and Webster City. The home team finished with a 163 total, followed by the Cadets at 174 and the Lynx at 175. Jacob Moore shot a 38 for the low round, followed in counters by Tyson Berning at 39, Eric Fjetland at 40 and Cale Kirstein at 46. Other varsity rounds were played by Garrett Seaba and Carson Harle (both at 51), Colin Kirstein (52) and Jackson Beisel (65).

‘Best in the Midwest:’ CGD planning for state-of-the-art baseball/softball complex

Can you imagine an outdoor space that will bring thousands of people to Clarion every year? A space that could be used virtually year-round? It could host baseball and softball games for not only high schools but little league and even college teams. It could accommodate marching band contests and function as a learning space for PE classes. It would even have features that golfers would love to use. The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Board of Education and Superintendent Joe Nelson are not only imagining this space but have already plunged into making it a reality.

Sharing God’s gift of music

12 year-old Estuardo Lopez is something of a musical prodigy. He is not your typical middle school student. He skillfully plays the piano, but never really had a formal teacher. In fact, he credits his abilities as a gift from God. Estuardo told his interesting story and talked about his desire to share his gift with others.

Middle school principal receives statewide recognition

Steve Haberman, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Middle School Principal, was a finalist for the 2021 Iowa Middle Level Principal of the Year award. “We are pleased to recognize school leaders who are committed to excellence in education,” said Dr. Roark Horn, Executive Director of School Administrators of Iowa (SAI).

Haberman previously received the award in 2007 and was again nominated by his peers. He will be recognized at this year's SAI annual conference in August.

CGD grad Abbas sees continued success wrestling at GVU

Cowboy track & field host their home relays

The Cowboy track & field team hosted the annual Cowboy Relays last Friday, with Forest City taking the class A title with 213 points. They were followed by Hampton-Dumont/CAL with 130, Iowa Falls-Alden with 124, Garner-Hayfield/Ventura with 54 and the Cowboys with 52 points. St. Edmond won the class B team title.

Highlights for the home crowd included Mateo Martinez winning the 100 dash in 11.74, with both the shuttle hurdle relay and the 4x2 crossing in first as well. A handful of runner-up finishes also made for a good team effort.

Cowgirl track & field team goes to Eagle Grove

The Cowgirls competed in the Lady Eagle Relays last Thursday in Eagle Grove. Bishop Garrigan took the team tile with 119 points, followed by Algona with 104, C-G-D with 89, Webster City with 75, West Hancock with 49, Garner-Hayfield/Ventura with 39 and Eagle Grove with 35 points.

Matea Conlon crossed in first in the 100 dash with a 13.34 time. Both the sprint medley relay and 4x4 relay took wins as well. Morgan Middleton continued her strong start in field events by taking second in both shot and discus.

Cowgirl golfers hit the links for new season

In a meet last Tuesday at Clarmond, the Cowgirl golf team hosted Garner-Hayfield/Ventura and lost 224-258 to the visiting Cardinals. Nicole Waters led the team with a 60, and was joined in counting scores by Emily Christensen with 65, Karina Torres with 66 and Lauren Brooks with 67. Also turning in varsity rounds were Delia Swanson with 71 and Tessa Warnke with 72.
