Playoff hopes for the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows/CAL football team mostly ended on a Friday night in October 2016 in Clarion, where Clear Lake won a district game 39-15.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Lions scored three touchdowns in the second. The Cowboys answered with 49 seconds left in the half on an 11-yard pass from Kainan Braun to Avery Harrington. Brendon Boyd’s kick made it 21-7 at the break.
Clear Lake scored twice more before the Cowboys put together another drive, finished by Reymundo Vasquez on a three-yard run with 8:41 left. Braun ran in the two-point try. Clear Lake added a late score.
Head coach Newt Lingenfelter pointed to turnovers. The Cowboys fumbled two kick returns and a pitch deep in their own territory.
On defense, Will Weidemann had a solo tackle for a loss and nine assists, and Vasquez had two solo tackles and three assists.
