Former CGD wrestler Portillo won't settle for second best

Note: This story was submitted to the Monitor last month so refers to some events that have already taken place.

KEARNEY – The match has replayed in his mind countless times over the past year.

University of Nebraska at Kearney wrestler Josh Portillo was two minutes away from celebrating a Division II national title with friends, family and teammates gathered inside the Wolstein Center in downtown Cleveland.

It was supposed to be his moment to shine.

Basketball recap: State leads in scoring, rebounding for Cowboys

This year’s Cowboy basketball team finished with an 8-15 overall record, with a 3-11 conference mark to tie them for sixth place. Clear Lake won the league title at 13-1, followed by Algona at 12-2 and Iowa Falls-Alden at 9-5. Connor State was honored with a Third Team spot on the All-NCC Teams.

As a team, the Cowboys scored 1,317 points overall for an average of 57.3 ppg. They made 512 out of 1,253 field goals for 40.9 percent, 130 out of 494 three-pointers for 26.3 percent and 163 out of 269 free throws for 60.6 percent.

7th Grade Cowgirl Squads Finish Season with 10 Wins

The 2019-20 season for the 7th grade Cowgirls basketball team wrapped up with a pair of victories over Clear Lake on January 28, which pushed us to a final record of 10-13. Back before Thanksgiving, our schedule kicked off with tough loss at Iowa Falls-Alden, but the girls bounced back and were able to get a close win at St. Edmonds. We then lost to Hampton-Dumont-CAL before a split with Clear Lake. The very next night, the Cowgirls also picked up a win against a South Hamilton squad comprised of 7th and 8th graders.

2019-2020 Middle School Wrestling season recap

The Clarion Goldfield Dows middle school wrestling team was short a few athletes from what it had come accustomed to having over the past years. What was lacking in numbers was made up in enthusiasm and eagerness to learn the sport.

Cowgirl basketball wrap-up: Kinnetz leads in scoring, Harle in rebounds for this year

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowgirls finished the season with a 16-5 overall record, and were 10-4 in NCC play for third place behind champion Clear Lake at 13-1 and Hampton-Dumont/CAL at 11-3. Raven Kinnetz earned a spot on the First Team in All-Conference balloting, with Morgan Middleton making the Third Team.

Cowboys put two on medal stand at State Wrestling

When it was over on Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena, the Cowboy wrestling team had two medal winners in this year’s State Wrestling Tournament. Reed Abbas placed seventh at 145, while Tyler Stein too eighth at 113 pounds.

Abbas pinned Clark of Waco-Wayland in 2:28 in his opener, then lost 6-0 to Rahnavardi of Don Bosco. He came through the backside of the bracket to take a 7-5 win over Kime of Sumer-Fredricksburg, but lost again in an 8-6 decision to Mcgeough of MFL-MarMac. He won his final match in a 21-6 technical fall over Knight of Mount Ayr to finish 42-11 for the year.

Cowboys wrestling takes seventh at 1A State Dual Tourney

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboy wrestling team started Wednesday’s State Duals with a rather daunting task in trying to defeat number two seeded Lisbon. It was not to be, as the Lions steamrolled over them for a 74-6 win.

The dual started at 145 as the Lions won the six matches to pile up a huge lead. Kain Nelson (220) finally turned it around with a pin in just 35 seconds for their first points. Unfortunately, that’s all they would get in the dual.

Cowgirls fall in region semifinal, 2 named to All-Conference Teams

The Cowgirls Basketball team ended their season last Friday with a loss to the West Hancock Eagles in the Class 2A-Region 3 semifinal. The Eagles, who had almost a perfect record on the year, took down the Cowgirls by a score of 67-51.

Cowboys beat Eagles, lose to Osage to end year

The Cowboy basketball had three players in double figures in a 75-30 opening round district win over Eagle Grove. The Cowboys were solidly in control 38-17 at the break.
