Cowboy wrestlers send three on to state tournament

In addition to the team taking part in State Duals on Wednesday, there will be three Cowboy wrestlers trying for an individual gold medal during the traditional tournament starting Thursday. Following action at the 1A District in Sioux Rapids, Tyler Stein (113), Reed Abbas (145) and Garrett Seaba (152) all punched their ticket to the big dance at ‘The Well.’ Both Tyler and Reed return for a second straight year.

Stein opened his day with a 16-1 technical fall over Juarez (K-P), then lost his next to go into wrestlebacks. He pinned Graham (EG) in 1:20 to advance.

Cowboys wrestlers returning to State Dual Tourney

After a one-year absence, the Cowboy wrestling team will make a return trip to Wells Fargo Arena this Wednesday for the State Duals after defeating two teams in regional action hosted in Clarion last Tuesday.

They opened the night by easily defeating AC/GC 64-16. Only five matches were actually contested, due to a small lineup for the Chargers. Cale Kirstein (126) won by fall in 3:06 and Rafael Jimenez (182) took a 10-0 major decision. There were nine other Cowboys getting their hand raised by forfeit.

Three in double figures lift Cowgirls basketball to win at Algona

In their final regular season game, the Cowgirl basketball team received double digit scoring from three members in a 53-44 win at Algona. The visitors held a 22-16 halftime advantage.

Cowboys basketball win season finale 71-40 over Algona

The Cowboys traveled to Algona last Tuesday and lost 71-40 to the home Bulldogs. Coady Olson poured in 18 points with a nice 5 of 6 night at the line. Mateo Martinez scored 11 points, with both hitting a three-pointer. Connor State added six points and Nevan Foss five points. Aiden Harrington pulled down six rebounds, Jaxon Carpenter made four assists, Olson made two steals and Carpenter went up for two blocked shots.

Girls Wrestling, cont.- Jean Berger, Rich Thacker share their views on the sanctioning issue

A letter was recently sent from Dr. Dale Crozier, Superintendent of the MFL-MarMac School District and a representative for Northeast Iowa on the IHSAA Council, to both the IHSAA and the IGHSAU. His letter states he is in full support of the creation of sanctioned girl’s wrestling in Iowa.

Girls wrestling movement is growing rapidly in Iowa

If you recall, sometime back I wrote an article spotlighting three of the girls at the elementary that were trying out wrestling, with one of them already having some success. Two others, sophomore Ashley Ramirez Marcelino and Eighth grader Mitzi Cano Godinez, have seen action on their respective wrestling teams. It begs the question, “If these girls stay with it, and others are added, are we looking at sanctioned girls wrestling at the high school level soon?”

Cowboys wrestling sends eight on to districts

The Cowboy wrestling team put eight guys through to the district round in taking yet another sectional team title last Saturday at Manson. They compiled 225.5 points to just barely finish ahead of the host team at 220 points. Following those two were Eagle Grove at 186, West Bend-Mallard at 154, PAC at 142, Belmond-Klemme at 71 and St. Edmond at 37.5.

Cowgirls basketball wins twice more as schedule draws to a close

The Cowgirls are trying to get on a bit of a roll as the schedule concludes and regionals are right around the corner. Last Monday they hosted the highly rated West Hancock Eagles and lost 74-27. Courtney Harle dropped seven points through the rims, with Quinn Hansch at five points with a trey and Morgan Middleton at four points. Raven Kinnetz scored three points, while Jadyn Jondle, Emma Conlon, Lexie Lane and Emma Keller all checked in at tow points each (those were the only stats available).

Cowboys basketball loses to W. Hancock, W. City

Last Monday night saw the Cowboys take a close 59-54 loss at West Hancock. Connor State scored 15 points, followed by Christian Gaytan and Coady Olson with identical 13 point totals. State grabbed nine boards, with Aidan Harrington at five rebounds and Mateo Martinez three. Jaxon Carpenter dished out six assists and made four steals, while State had three blocked shots to lead those columns.

Cowboy wrestling team second at NCC tournament

After having won it in recent years, the C-G-D wrestling team still made a respectable showing at this year’s NCC wrestling tournament on January 25 in Iowa Falls. The team not only finished in second place, but crowned two champions in Reed Abbas (145) and Garrett Seaba (152).

The home team Iowa Falls-Alden won the title with 198.5 points, just edging out the Cowboys at 192.5 points. The finishing order behind those two was as follows: Humboldt 187.5, Hampton-Dumont/CAL 175, Algona 158, Webster City 111.5, Clear Lake 102 and St. Edmond with 14.
