Cowboy basketball defeats South Hardin

Christian Gaytan lit it up for 23 points as the Cowboys rolled to a 61-45 season-opening win over South Hardin last Tuesday in Eldora. It was 23-20 in favor of the home team at the break, with the Cowboys then outscoring them 41 points to 22 throughout the second half. That half began with C-G-D going on a 9-0 run aided by back to back threes by Coady Olson & Gaytan.

Raven Kinnetz was unstoppable last Tuesday night in Eldora as the Cowgirl basketball team easily defeated South Hardin 57-29 on the Tigers home floor. The Cowgirls were up 38-16 by halftime to pretty much decide the outcome at that point. Kinnetz drained the nets for 25 points including four connections from long range. Quinn Hansch was next with seven points, followed by Courtney Harle with six points and both Nicole Waters and Emma Keller at three points each. Jadyn Jondle scored two points and Emma Conlon one point.

Cowgirls named to North Central All-Conference volleyball teams

These Cowgirl volleyball players were named to the North Central All-Conference Teams in recent balloting by league coaches. Pictured, from left, Kendall Lienemann, Alaina Friesleben, Morgan Middleton, Jadyn Jondle and Lexie Lane. Middleton (outside hitter), Friesleben ( setter) and Jondle (libero) were all named to the First Team. Middleton led the league in kill efficiency, total kills and kills per set. Friesleben was second in assists, while Jondle was third in digs.

            Over her years of going to Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, junior Morgan Middleton admits that while she participated in four sports (including basketball, track & field and softball) up to her freshman year that volleyball has always been her favorite.

            The 2019 Cowgirl volleyball team finished a great season at 30-7 overall, with a perfect 7-0 record as North Central Conference champs. Humboldt was second at 6-1 and Algona third at 5-2. Because of that, they landed five players on the All-NCC teams. Middleton, Friesleben and Jondle all earned spots on the First Team, Lienemann on the Second Team and Lane on the Third Team as a freshman. The team advanced all the way to the state 2A semifinals before bowing out. They finished 78-17 overall in sets and 12-1 in NCC sets.

Soggy weather dampers SCC cross country’s week

Rain, rain, go away, come again another day. Those words should be the motto of the South Central Calhoun cross country teams so far this season.

When one glances at the Titans’ 2019 schedule, SCC have only participated in just three meets. This week, the Titans will not be able to compete on the cross country course, as the Denison-Schleswig Invitational and the Pocahontas Area Invitational were both cancelled this past week.

Titans sweep Manson-Northwest Webster on Senior Night

Regardless of sport, the Battle of Calhoun County – the rivalry between South Central Calhoun and Manson-Northwest Webster – is known as a showcase of intrigue and talent rising to the occasion.

This time around, the latest bout on the volleyball court between the Titans and the Cougars was one sided. The side that prevailed in this rivalry match was the squad decked in purple, black and white.

No. 6 Titans outlasts South Hamilton, 21-6

There’s a saying in the football world: Wins are like girlfriends, and not all of them will be pretty.

The meaning behind the phrase is that no great team is immune to playing in close games. However, it is great teams who prevail, even when things don’t exactly go their way.

When their collective backs were put against the wall, the South Central Calhoun football team pushed back against that adversity and ultimately came out on top when the clock read nothing but zeroes.

Southern Cal’s 2009 state title team celebrates 10th anniversary

In the wide world of sports, there is a popular quote among popular quote. The quote is that pain is temporary, and glory is forever. This anonymous proverb holds weight when it comes to the game of football.

A player – whether it is in high school, college or the professional ranks – put in hours of practice, team meetings and preparation to simply gear up for anywhere from nine to 20 games.  For coaches, those hours are tenfold.

SCC runners place sixth, eighth at MVAOCOU Meet

With two meets cancelled so far into their 2019 campaign, the South Central Calhoun cross country teams have not had the luxury of running against other schools. Due to this bout with Mother Nature, the Titans have had to gauge themselves through practice and working their way up by way of shaving time.

SCC continued this build up by taking part in the Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto-Charter Oak-Ute Cross Country Meet, which took place last Thursday at the Willow Vale Golf Club in Mapleton.
