Cowboys score big 41-6 win over rival Eagles

The Cowboy football team opened their season in a big way with a 41-6 road win over neighboring Eagle Grove. Nevan Foss galloped 78 yards for a score on a kick return and took off on a 61-yard run for another, with Coady Olson grabbing an eight yard TD pass from Ethan Traub. Garrett Seaba dashed into the endzone from two yards out.

Middle School summer coaches report on season

Finally able to have a semblance of a more normal season, coaches Alison Friesleben (softball) and Bryce Tegtmeyer (baseball) felt it was a bit different while also witnessing some good things for the future of the overall programs.

Members of the baseball team were Owen Sweeney, Dietrich Woodley, Kiernan Bremmer, Kolton Hefti, Daniel Gomez-Juarez, Ethan Russel, Estuardo Lopez, Christian Herzberg, McCoy Yackle, Tate Jackson, Justin German, Ethan Hasty, Colton Johnson, Selvin Gonzalez, Tristan Kakacek, Brandon Stein, Cole Rethman and Clayton Loux.

Mason Allen has great time at AAU event

CGD incoming sophomore Mason Allen just recently returned from the AAU Junior Olympics held in Humble, Texas. The event features thousands of athletes from all over the country. He competed in the discus and javelin events.

“You have to qualify to get there,” said Allen. “I went to Des Moines first, and then qualified for the regional in Minnesota. I placed well enough there to move on. I wasn’t really expecting to go, but I also knew I had a chance.” August 2 and 4 were his actual competition days for the two events.

In his sixth year as an umpire, Jason Berning works first state tournament

Over the several years that Jason Berning was head baseball coach for the Cowboys, he had the idea in the back of his mind that he would like to be an umpire someday when his coaching days were over. Now he fulfilled another goal by working his first state tournament.

CGD baseball and softball All-Conference

Pictured are the All-Conference selections for C-G-D. Cowgirl softball player Clarissa Hasty was a Third Team choice, and not only led the team in batting but tied for 21st in the conference in batting average at .351. She was also 20th in on-base percentage at .442. Cael Chase was a Second Team choice, and led the Cowboys in hitting along with tying for 15^th in both batting average and slugging percentage in conference play. Mateo Martinez made the Third Team, and finished third on the team in hitting with a .304 average.

Cowboy stats show Cael Chase, Jackson among leaders

The 2021 Cowboy baseball team finished at 1-21 overall, with a 1-13 conference mark. Webster City was the NCC champ with a 14-0 record, followed by Humboldt at 10-4 and Algona at 9-5. Cael Chase earned a spot on the All-Conference second team, while Mateo Martinez received a nod to the third team in balloting of league coaches.

Final softball stats show Clarissa Hasty as leading hitter

The 2021 Cowgirl softball team finished at 1-22 overall and a 0-14 North Central Conference mark. Clarissa Hasty earned a spot on the Third Team in All-Conference balloting.

Cowgirls’ Trca hits homer

In the softball game on June 29 versus Garner-Hayfield/Ventura, Cowgirl Kennedy Trca hit her first ever homerun. This has also been the team’s only homer this season. Trca’s mother Trisha Barz said, “This moment was so joyous for everyone including her teammates. They are an amazing support system, encouraging one another each and every night.” Trca is pictured with Coach Steve TerHark.

On the same night during the JV game Ellie Mewes also hit a homerun.

Cowgirls keep it close before losing at Parkersburg

It was a moral victory of sorts in the Cowgirls first round regional matchup with the home team Aplington-Parkersburg. The Falcons squeaked out an 11-9 win, but the Cowgirls were within reach of the victory in taking an 8-6 lead into the fifth inning following a five-run outburst.

Cowboy baseball needs a win badly

In summarizing two previous games that were not yet reported on, the Cowboys lost to Iowa Falls-Alden 12-3 as Preston Gardner, Thane Jackson and Damien Bjorklund came up with the only hits. Nevan Foss, Cael Chase and Gardner scored the runs, with Gardner also credited with an RBI. Bjorklund took the loss, allowing two earned on 12 hits while striking out five batters. C. Chase also saw pitching duties, striking out two.
