The City of Clarion started building its new reverse osmosis water treatment plant in 2023, with completion expected in August 2025.

The plant is meant to improve water quality and send softened water to homes and businesses. Clarion’s water, like much of north-central Iowa’s, is hard, and many households run their own softeners. Treating the water at the plant cuts that need.

The project was years in the making. In late 2021, USDA Rural Development’s Iowa director, Theresa Greenfield, came to Clarion to announce an $8.1 million low-interest loan for the plant through the agency’s water and waste program.
