Satya Nadella became Microsoft’s CEO in 2014, the third in its history after Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer.
He was born in Hyderabad, India, and came to the U.S. for a master’s in computer science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He joined Microsoft in 1992 and ran its cloud business before taking the top job.
Under Nadella, Microsoft moved its focus to Azure cloud computing and invested heavily in OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT. Its market value grew several times over.
Microsoft has one of its largest data center campuses in West Des Moines. Some of the AI work announced from Redmond actually runs on servers in central Iowa.
