Mary Ellen Patterson named Corn Days parade marshal

The theme of Dows Corn Days, which is planned August 6 – 8, is “One for the History Books.” With that theme, it only seems appropriate to have a long-time Dows resident who is steeped in the town’s history to lead the Corn Days parade. So it comes as no surprise to the people who know her that Mary Ellen Patterson was chosen as the 2021 parade marshal.

New portable traffic control lights in county

Last week, several crewmembers from Wright County Secondary Roads sat in on training for the county’s new portable traffic control lights. Wright County Engineer Adam Clemons explains that road projects that require traffic control can use the portable light instead of flaggers. “These traffic control devices will decrease chances of injury to the road crew and aid in the traveling public going through our construction zones,” Clemons noted. The Secondary Roads Facebook page will be updated with information when they will be putting the lights to use. Photo provided

 

Iowa River Players plan volunteer ‘boot camp’

Recently, the Iowa River Players (IRP) Community Theater in Rowan completed their post-pandemic re-opening with the hit show, "Robin Hood & the Babes in the Wood".  Director Luanne Krabbe said, “We were all so glad to be back onstage and with our audience after being closed during 2020.”

Haberman earns Doctor of Optometry degree

Jake Haberman, O.D., of Clarion, was among 134 students recently awarded the Doctor of Optometry degree from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis.

A native of Clarion, Haberman is the son of Michelle and Steve Haberman. Haberman is a graduate of Clarion-Goldfield High School and Wartburg College. He recently accepted a job at Wolfe Family Vision Center in Webster City

Dows school bell ringing again

After some recent work on the schoolhouse bell at Vernon Township Center School #5, now located in Dows, the bell is chiming again. The bell was previously in disrepair. The one-room schoolhouse is located between the Depot and the Mercantile in downtown Dows. The school was moved five miles from its original home in 1998 by the Dows Historical Society and restored as a community project. Dirt Diggers has another successful year

It was another dirty year for Dirt Diggers campers this summer. The camp is typically held every year at Lake Cornelia Park and organized by Raejean Chapman. Campers from Kindergarten through fifth grade got to spend a few days last month tromping through the woods, making mudpies and learning about the great outdoors.

               Whether you recognize it from Burt Reynold’s iconic black Pontiac Firebird or know the song “Eastbound and Down,” the 1977 movie “Smokey and the Bandit” is a classic. However, most people likely haven’t seen it in the movie theater for a long time or ever. This weekend, you will get the chance to see that movie on the big screen!

Bids for ball complex ‘astronomically high’

At the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Board of Education meeting Monday night, the school board faced some difficult decisions. The group had hoped to approve bids for the baseball/softball complex and the middle school gym at this meeting. Bids were opened on July 8. Both projects came in substantially over the engineers’ estimates.
