Terry Baxter, House Happenings February 24, 2022

The debate floor of the Iowa House has been very busy this week. Yesterday, Wednesday, February 23rd, we passed 32 bipartisan bills off the floor of the Iowa House of Representatives.

Overall, we have healthy and positive relationships between Republican and Democrat Representatives in the Iowa House. Washington could learn some lessons from "Iowa Nice." Politicians can both agree and disagree with honor, respect and dignity.

Council accepts bids for Mosaic/Early Learning Center renovation project

At the Clarion City Council meeting on Tuesday, February 15, the council took up several agenda items related to the Early Learning Center project. A public hearing was held on proposed plans, specifications, form of contract and estimate of cost for the project that would renovate the Mosaic building into the Early Learning Center. The hearing was a necessary step as the city is committing funds to the project. No comments from the public were made during the hearing or received prior to it.

Supervisors hear from Trails Committee

At the Wright County Board of Supervisors meeting held on Tuesday, Raejean Chapman gave an update from the Wright County Trails Committee. She discussed the goal to extend the trail around Belmond and Lake Cornelia through the rest of the county and also connect to trails from Mason City. The committee has received some grants, including $35,000 from the Jacobson Foundation. They have also started soliciting funds. Chapman noted that acquiring land for the trail is the biggest obstacle.

From Belmond to the Big Game!

When the 2021/2022 NFL season started, few people could likely imagine attending a Super Bowl that included the Cincinnati Bengals as one of the competitors. Afterall, some oddsmakers had given them as slim as a 200 to 1 shot of making the big game. However, as the season wore on and the team hung around and then flourished, the dream became a reality for Bengals fans. Interestingly, this included some local fans who got to ride the team’s wave of success thanks to an amazing family connection.

Dows Fire Dept involved in accident, struck by vehicle on interstate

On Tuesday, February 15, the Dows Fire Department was involved in an accident when their fire truck was hit by a vehicle on Interstate 35.

According to Dows Fire Chief Bill Heiden, two local firemen were responding to a call to a vehicle fire on the interstate that afternoon. Heiden explained that the fire truck cut through the median to approach the fire and was struck by a pickup truck who had lost control. The pickup, who was passing a semi and apparently did not see the emergency vehicle, t-boned the Dows fire truck.

Local FFA Chapter to host meal packaging event

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows FFA is hosting a meal packaging event on March 2 at the CGD High School. The local FFA chapter is working with Meals from the Heartland, a faith-based organization who packages meals for delivery to malnourished children in Iowa, across the U.S. and around the world.

CGD Middle schoolers participate in Science Fair

On February 8, the gym at Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Middle School was buzzing with activity. Members of the public were welcomed to the school for a special event. The Middle School Talented and Gifted (TAG) students put on a science fair and shared their projects with the public.

Local man will likely die in prison for double murders

Eagle Grove resident Michael James Shivers, 57, has been sentenced in Webster County to over 70 years in prison on two counts of second degree murder in the deaths of Jamal Cox and Tyrone Cunningham.
