Yellow bass still a Lake Cornelia concern, DNR still considering options for lake renovation

A couple of weekends ago, dozens of fishermen descended on Lake Cornelia. They were after one thing - the not so elusive yellow bass. In a matter of a few hours, a couple thousand fish were caught totaling around 400 pounds. The results of the tournament, the Yellow Bass Crash Big Mass Ice Fishing event, confirmed one thing – there are still a lot of yellow bass in Lake Cornelia. And this is a big problem.

Local Lions Clubs screen all Wright County students through Iowa’s KidSight program

The “eyes” have it!

Most people familiar with Lions Clubs are aware of their commitment to eyesight. Many know of their collections of used eyeglasses.

KidSight is another of the many ways Lions Clubs work to improve eyesight. It is a program organized by the Iowa Lions which conducts free vision screenings for children from six months through six years old. Local club members take the photos. Screening results are interpreted by the University of Iowa Department of Ophthalmology.

CGD third graders get inspired for LEGO League

Third graders at Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Elementary School have been busy building. The students have been participating in Lego League during their library time. LEGO League introduces science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to children through fun hands-on learning.

According to K-12 Librarian Kristina Moore, “Participants gain real-world problem-solving experience through a guided, global robotics program, helping today's students and teachers build a better future together.”

Federal Disaster Declaration approved for 25 Iowa counties, including Wright

On Wednesday, February 25, Gov. Kim Reynolds received notification that President Biden had granted her request for a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration for 25 counties that were severely impacted by Dec.15, 2021, high winds, severe storms, and tornadoes. The declaration provides assistance to public entities and select nonprofit organizations.

Clarion Chamber passes resolutions to dissolve

In a meeting of Clarion Chamber members last week, the group voted on resolutions that move them closer to merging with Clarion Economic Development to form the Clarion Development Alliance (CDA).

The two resolutions passed included the following- 1) Adoption of resolutions of the Agreement to Combine Entities and for Disposition of Assets and Liabilities to Combined Entity and Article of Merger. 2) Adoption of a resolution dissolving the Clarion Chamber and Development.

Supervisors discuss past drainage issues

During the Monday meeting of the Wright County Board of Supervisors, they dealt with a few drainage issues from days gone by. They moved to correct a discrepancy that county drainage clerk Courtney Morris found in a past drainage action. During an October hearing regarding work to DD #107, there was a verbal motion made that included a different assessment percentage than was referred to on a report. No landowners were in attendance at the hearing and no one had objected but the board moved to correct the numbers for the record.

First Citizens Bank provides financial literacy resources to local students and community

First Citizens Bank is bringing financial literacy education to over 2,780 students and residents in 10 counties in Iowa. Students at 21 schools, including Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Elementary and the surrounding community have free access to Banzai, an award-winning online program and content library that allows users to practice real-world finance. At a time when a solid foundation of practical financial knowledge is critical, these resources will make a huge impact on users.

Carlin challenging incumbent Grassley

Jim Carlin is finding himself out on Iowa’s byways.

“I’m on the road…on average four days a week I would say,” said Carlin by phone a few weeks ago.

Heading from Des Moines to his home in Sioux City, the Woodbury Republican is alternating between his duties in the Iowa legislature where he serves as a state senator and hitting the campaign trail as he seeks to win the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate race.

Carlin estimated he has put 80,000 miles on the family’s vehicle in the last 12 months.

Lawmakers propose additional funding for Glenwood issues, plan for tax cuts

Iowa Republican lawmakers have kicked off the state budgeting process, setting spending targets as negotiations continue on significant tax cut proposals.

Gov. Kim Reynolds and GOP leaders in the House and Senate proposed budgets that would spend about 90 percent of the money that the state brings in – about $8.2 billion of the $9 billion available for spending.
