Week fourteen of the 2022 legislative session included time on the Senate floor celebrating the service of the many retiring senators in the Iowa Senate. Because of the redistricting, the number of senators retiring is higher than usual, with some retirees leaving after more than 20 years and some only after 2 years. It was good to hear both parties review fond memories of work we have done together.

Ernst in Clarion Monday to talk avian flu

In a brief stop in Wright County on Monday afternoon, Senator Joni Ernst met with some poultry representatives to discuss Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). The stop was part of Ernst’s annual 99 county tour though the event was not open to the general public.

Texas-style jams back in Dows after over two-year break

In December of 2019, a lively bunch of musicians met in Dows for their usual ‘Texas-style jam.’ As music, dancing and good times were shared, the group had no idea that they would not be able to meet again for over two years. Now after a 28-month COVID-induced break, the band is back together.

School board approves budget

School Business Official, Anita Frye, presented on the fiscal year 2023 budget at the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Board of Education meeting on Monday night. She noted that the headcount enrollment for the district went up by 38.8 students this school year, which impacts what the district receives from the state for funding.

Assessor Plagge leaving, Budget amendment approved at supervisors meeting

At the Monday meeting of the Wright County Board of Supervisors, Assessor Shari Plagge announced that she will be leaving her position to act as assessor for the City of Ames. She will be starting their next week. Plagge has been Wright County’s Assessor since 2010. Plagge noted that Tonee Nicholas who has been in the Assessor’s Office for three years was named Deputy Assessor and after she leaves, Nicholas will be ‘acting assessor’ for the county.

2022 Clarion-Goldfield-Dows High School Band/Choir Solo & Ensemble Festival Results

On Saturday, April 2, several CGD HS Music students competed in the IHSMA State Solo & Ensemble Contest at Central Springs High School in Manly, IA. The Band & Choir students received a total of 8 Division I (Superior) ratings, 15 Division II (Excellent) ratings, and 2 Division III (Good) ratings. Congratulations to the students for achieving this high level of performance! You all worked hard, were well prepared, performed to the best of your ability, and represented CGD HS extremely well!

Understanding your tax assessment- And what to do if you have questions or objections to it

Wright County Assessor Shari Plagge says a large part of her office’s role is helping educate property owners on their assessments. This is especially true at this time of year, since assessments or ‘notices of value’ were sent out a couple weeks ago. People often have questions on how their assessment was determined or what they can do if they disagree with it. Plagge addressed many of those questions recently.

Goldfield Legion awarded

The Goldfield American Legion Post 370 was presented a membership award. The post exceeded their membership quota by 105%.

Commander Brad Crees accepted the award from 3rd District Vice Commander Richard Echelberger. Brad indicated that he was happy to see the post grow and that hey had some very difficult challenges during COVID. The post building was hit with a mold issue that cost over $8,000 to resolve. The post is struggling to get back up and operating to full capacity.

Former WC mental health counselor faces sanctions for Medicaid fraud

A northern Iowa mental health counselor twice convicted of tampering with records is facing new licensing sanctions for submitting fraudulent billing statements to Medicaid.

The Iowa Board of Behavioral Science has charged mental health counselor Jill Coleman, of Creston, with being convicted of an offense that directly relates to the duties and responsibilities of the profession.

According to court records, Coleman was charged in late 2020 with felony fraudulent practices, felony identity theft and misdemeanor tampering with records.
