History of Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is a holiday honoring motherhood that is observed in different forms throughout the world. In the United States, Mother’s Day 2022 will occur on Sunday, May 8. The American incarnation of Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914.

Prestage on probation after brief suspension

During a USDA inspection of the Prestage Foods plant early this month, USDA inspectors entered a barn in the slaughterhouse area of the plant, where they witnessed a Prestage employee attempt, unsuccessfully, to stun a hog with a hand held bolt device.

As we near the end of this legislative session the volume of our work each day goes down, but the importance of it does not. With the availability of quality child care being a problem for many families, the Senate amended and passed HF 2198. This bill will ease some regulations, including allowing child care center employees and substitutes who are 16 years or older to supervise school-age children without additional supervision. In addition, it permits 1 adult child care worker for every 7 children who are 2 years old and 1 child care worker for every 10 children who are 3 years old.

CGD school district to receive tech grant of almost $400,000

               Over the course of the last few years, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, like thousands of school districts nationwide, learned a great deal about distance and digital education. As school moved online during COVID, districts also faced major concerns about connectivity. Many students and their families just didn’t have reliable internet access or access at all. Even though school has mostly returned to normal, those issues remain as CGD and every other school district realizes the necessity of reliable connectivity to the future of education.

‘Miss Denise’ from Iowa’s Blind Department brings story time to Rowan Library

“Fergus, we already found you!” is the first line of the children’s book ‘Find Fergus’ by Mike Boldt.

And it was the first book ‘Miss Denise’ Bean, Youth Services Librarian from the Iowa Department for the Blind, read to the children and adults in attendance at Story Time held at the Rowan Public Library on Wednesday afternoon, April 20.

The one-hour event is one of a dozen or more being held around Iowa. Rowan Librarian Steve Sutter said, “I saw the invitation via email and applied to be one of the towns chosen. We are fortunate to have Denise in our midst.”

Supervisors deal with more drainage matters

At Monday’s Board of Supervisors meeting, Auditor Betty Ellis reviewed a special meeting held last week with Summit Carbon Solutions. The supervisors along with County Engineer Adam Clemons discussed various matters with the company, including permits and agreements for road crossings, working in right of ways and overweight and oversize loads. At that meeting, Summit officials reported that the proposed pipeline project will generate an estimated $2.5 million in property taxes for Wright County in the future.

Clarion council: More public hearings, another pilot study for water plant

Like the previous meeting, the Clarion City Council meeting on Tuesday April 19 included multiple public hearings. The first was for the issuance of hospital revenue notes for the benefit of Iowa Specialty Hospital – Clarion in an amount not to exceed $2,360,000. The hospital in Clarion will be adding multiple labor and delivery rooms and shifting some office spaces. No comments were made during the hearing and the subsequent resolution approving the matter passed. ISH will repay the loan themselves, not at a cost to the taxpayers.

Local 4-Hers prep meals with grant funds

The Lake Clovers 4-H Club of Wright County hosted a meal packaging event at their March meeting.  The opportunity to apply for the Wright County Endowment Grant got the group thinking about their 2022 Service Project and this year they choose to package meals with the funds. 

NIACC inducts local student into Phi Theta Kappa

North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) inducted 100 students into the College’s Alpha Psi Beta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society that recognizes the academic accomplishments of students attending two-year colleges.

Raven Kinnetz a 2021 Clarion-Goldfield-Dows graduate was one of the inductees.
