Wright County Fair seeking queen candidates

The Wright County Fair board is currently accepting applications for this year’s Fair Queen Pageant. The Queen will receive a $500 scholarship from Humboldt Mutual Insurance Association in addition to gifts and a trip to the Iowa State Fair Queen contest sponsored by the Wright County Fair Board and Humboldt Mutual Insurance Association.

Gildner joins practices with Wolfe Eye Clinic

After 40 years in practice, David E. Gildner, O.D. has joined efforts with Wolfe Eye Clinic at both his Belmond and Clarion locations. The long-standing relationship with Dr. Gildner and Wolfe Eye Clinic medical doctors has made for an easy merger in which Dr. Gildner will continue to practice after the completion. Both the Clarion and Belmond locations will be branded as Wolfe Family Vision Center, joining ten other locations across the state of Iowa including Albia, Fairfield, Grundy Center, Humboldt, Sac City, Story City, Traer, Toledo, Waverly and Webster City.

More wins for boys golf

The Cowboys golf team is a roll! Last week, they continued their winning ways. On Monday, May 2, they won another home meet at Clarmond (CGD’s score 162) against Forest City (181), Belmond-Klemme (204), and Central Springs (210). Elic Fjetland, who lost a ball on #9 that cost him two strokes ended with Medalist honors anyway with a 39. Jacob Moore was right behind him with a 40. Jackson Beisel really came through with a 41 and Cale Kirstein finished with a very respectable 42. Coach Pat O’Brien said, “We played very well Monday night at Clarmond.

Join the KLUB! Kids Klub forming for young baseball and softball fans

With the new baseball/softball complex nearing completion in Clarion, it is an exciting time to be a ball fan in this area! To get some of the youngest fans fired up, a fun new opportunity was unveiled earlier this year: the Kids Klub. According to its founder, Ryan Nail, the ‘klub’ is essentially a fan club to get youth involved in baseball and softball this summer, with lots of exciting perks included for its members.

CGD grad still ‘killing’ it at North Dakota State

Though she is no longer a multi-sport athlete, Morgan Middleton still finds herself busier than ever. As the end of her freshmen year at North Dakota State University in Fargo draws near, she is working her way through finals week. Middleton is not only almost through her first year academically, but is also wrapping up her first season on the NDSU Women’s Volleyball team, and she loved every minute of it.

Sec of State Pate in Clarion to talk about trafficking, confidentiality programs

Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate stopped by Clarion last week to share information about two initiatives his office is touting. Pate discussed the Safe at Home and Iowa Businesses Against Trafficking programs with representatives from various Clarion businesses and the Clarion Development Alliance.

Supervisors hear from county attorney on legal issue

At the Monday meeting of the Wright County Board of Supervisors, Eric Simonson, Wright County Attorney, spoke before the board about a legal matter. He discussed the possible appointment of an attorney to act as county attorney in a post-conviction relief court proceeding due to recusal of the county attorney’s office. The matter pertains to a felony conviction dating back about four years ago. The person convicted has filed for post-conviction relief action, which is similar to an appeal but handled by the district court.

TAG quiz bowl team takes 8th place in national contest

Recently, the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows fifth grade Talented and Gifted (TAG) team won eighth place in the United States in the Spring Thinking Cap Quiz Bowl. This is the second year the school has participated in the contest.

The quiz bowl tests are online computer contests of 100 multiple-choice questions. Areas covered include math, geography, government, sports, spelling, science, literature, English, history, general information and just plain fun trivia. It is meant to be a team activity with all takers around one computer.

Q. What is the Primary Election?

A. The Primary Election is an election by the political parties to nominate their candidates for the General Election ballot. No one is elected in a Primary election; candidates are nominated. In order to win a political party nomination, the candidate must receive more votes than anyone else in his/her party for that race and receive at least 35% of the votes cast for that office by members of their political party.

CGD Elementary holds leadership event

Last week, the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Elementary Lighthouse team helped organize a fun event at the school. They planned and invited business and community members to Leadership Day. The Lighthouse team is essentially the elementary’s equivalent to a student council where students are chosen to be the voice of the school.
