When a ten year old girl decided to join her local Benton County, Iowa chapter of 4-H in the year 1952, she could not have imagined that such a simple decision, made so young, would take her so far. That it would lead her to higher education, and from there to the other side of the planet, in the wake of the most destructive and deadly war in history.

NEW Cooperative Foundation Donates to Local 4-H Clubs

The NEW Cooperative Foundation continues their commitment to supporting local 4-H youth. Recently, the Foundation donated $52,020 to 22 county extension and outreach offices, which will support 3,468 individual 4-H members. 

 

Gold-Eagle Coop scholarships

This year was the first year Gold-Eagle Coop has offered scholarships to graduating seniors pursuing higher education. The scholarship committee enjoyed reading through the 11 applications submitted from many of the area schools and selecting two deserving candidates for a scholarship of $500 each. The committee consisted of Chris Staudt, Jim Glawe, Elizabeth McOllough, Kyle Greiman, and Boone Morgan. Congratulations to Maggie Vaske of Bancroft and Ethan Traub of Clarion for being Gold-Eagle’s inaugural scholarship winners.

Upgrades at Lake Cornelia fulfill fallen Eagle Scout candidate's dream

Before his tragic death by suicide last year,  local teenager Brandon Zigrang was on track to earn the elusive and coveted rank of Eagle Scout. An avid fisherman from a very young age, he had planned out his Eagle Scout community service project -- the addition of two fish cleaning stations near his favorite fishing spot on the shore of Lake Cornelia -- and was working on the final arrangements to install them at the time of his passing. Now, led by his parents Jean and Becky Zigrang, and his fellow scouts from Clarion Troop 1047, his Eagle Scout project has been completed.

New Water Treatment Facility Officially Broke Ground, the Future for City Water

The City of Clarion has begun construction of a new reverse osmosis water treatment facility. Anticipated to be completed in August 2025, the water treatment facility aims to improve water quality and provide softened water to households, businesses, and the greater community. 

Chicken Soup – and Much More – for the Hungry Soul

At the Clarion Food Pantry in the First Lutheran Church, Coordinator Missy Loux and several volunteers are seen preparing to distribute food to those in need. The pantry operates on a hybrid model, part pre-packed groceries and part recipient's choice, and serves over 600 people per month from the First Lutheran location, and another 300 people across Wright County.

Des Moines, IA – Town & Country Insurance of Clarion, IA, has been named a Premier Partner by EMC Insurance Companies (EMC), which means the agency is one of the highest-performing EMC agencies in the country. This designation places the agency in the top ten percent of all EMC agencies nationally. The Premier Partner award is based on key performance indicators including retention, profitability and growth, which are reviewed over a three-year period.

Local grad returned home to teach, thanks to local scholarship

This is Colton Poncin's first year as a teacher in the Eagle Grove schools, but he's far from a newbie to the local schools. Poncin graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 2018, and today he teaches 5th grade Special Education, and coaches High School football and basketball.

"It's been great since many of the people I'm working with now were my teachers, which is pretty cool," Poncin said. 

Busma is 100 Women Who Care recipient, group plans next meeting this month

Eagle Grove's 100 Women Who Care chapter is one of over 700 "100 Who Care" groups around the world. The first 100 who care group was formed by Jackson, Michigan's Karen Dunigan in 2008, according to the group's website. 100 Who Care groups are "giving circles", where each member donates a specific amount of money at regular intervals, which are then gifted to worthy causes and individuals.
