A Word to describe Clarion’s Development Alliance: NEW

One word to describe the Clarion Chamber and development organization is NEW. Relatively NEW is its working name:  Clarion Development Alliance (CDA), combining the Chamber of Commerce and Development Commission. NEW is its Executive Director:  Sam Stumpf. NEW location:  105 – 2nd Avenue N.E. in Clarion. Several NEW board members: Melinda Anderson as its President.

 

Clarion P.E.O Celebrate 100 years!

The members of P.E.O. are pleased to announce the 100th anniversary of their chapter, Chapter FS, organized on February 28, 1921, in Clarion, lowa. "Women Helping Women Reach for the Stars." That is the goal of P.E.O.. The sisterhood is dedicated to empowering girls and women through education and providing support in helping them meet their highest aspirations.

CGD August School Board Meeting

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows School Board met Thursday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. In public input, Alison Marshall, representing the Music Boosters, questioned the board regarding plans for an auditorium. Marshall mentioned that the boosters have volunteers on board to write grants and conduct research to accomplish this. Joe Carrow expressed concerns from the public about the potential misuse of school vehicles by the administration. Carrow requested the board to provide him with the car usage policy and Mr. Joe Nelson’s contract for review.

Goldfield’s Going Ons

The United Presbyterian Church of Goldfield hosted vacation bible school August 7th and 8th. Preschool through fifth grade were welcomed. The place of worship not only provided entertainment for children but also raised money for Lazy J Rescue Ranch, a local non profit animal rescue. The children were offered lunch to go along with crafts, stories, games and music entertainment. 

Sound of Freedom is a Good Conversation Starter but Education is Key

Human trafficking is an issue that has been thrust into the local spotlight. This is due to a new movie that hit theaters in early July but is coming to our local theaters in early August. Sound of Freedom depicts Jim Caviezel as Tim Ballard, a former U.S. Department of Homeland Security agent who rescues children from trafficking in Colombia. The Sound of Freedom misses the harsh reality of human trafficking that hits closer to home than most are aware of.

Dow’s Corn Days: A Sweet Time in a Small Town!

Dow’s Corn Days unofficially started Saturday morning with the town’s parade. Bill and Barb Chambers of Dows led the route. Those familiar with the small community of Dows and those who are not were able to meet in the town park after the parade. In true Corn Days fashion, there was a sweet corn feed and watermelon to quench everyone’s thirst after the delicious treat. Children ran free in the fenced park while adults watched close by.

Gift of Giving: If there is a need, we’re trying to meet it

72 children from preschool to high school in Wright County received school supplies from Erica Lindeman’s nonprofit Gift of Giving in 2022. Erica and her volunteers plan to exceed that number for the 2023-2024 school year but need the community’s help. 

As suicides rise in the US, the 988 hotline offers hope – but most Americans aren’t aware of it

July 2023 marks the one-year anniversary of the national launch of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Currently, more than 200 call centers throughout the U.S. are responding to 988 calls. But few people know it exists. SciLine interviewed Dr. Emmy Betz, a professor of emergency medicine at the University of Colorado, who discussed the critical need to raise awareness about 988, the increasing numbers of suicide deaths in the U.S.

Woman-Owned, Family-Operated Ice Cream Shop Opens in Clarion

Kelsey Burres, owner of The Main Scoop in Clarion, wanted to make sure that her space felt all-American and classic. You cannot get more ‘all American’ than a woman-owned, family-operated ice cream shop on main street in a small town. At least that is what I thought until Kelsey shared that she and her husband, Jared, have been dating since the second grade! Jared has supported Kelsey in all of her business endeavors from selling leggings and crafting jewelry to a career in nursing. Kelsey has always been business minded.

The Heartland Truck Show Returns to Clarion

The shine of chrome and the smell of diesel will once again take over the streets of downtown Clarion for the 6th annual Heartland Truck Show July 29th and 30th.  The quote is “If you got it, A truck brought it’ and the Heartland Truck Show is an opportunity for the public to not only see the trucks that crisscross the American highways up close and personal, but meet the men and women behind the wheel.
