Cowgirls reach semifinals again, fall to Mount Vernon

For the second year in a row the Cowgirl volleyball team came within one match win of playing for the championship. This time it was a strong Mount Vernon (MV) team that kept the red & black out of their system and back on their heels most of the time in a three-set 3A match win. Set scores were 25-16, 25-22 and 25-13.

Isaiah Nebbe headed to State cross country

Senior Cowboy cross country runner Isaiah Nebbe is headed to Fort Dodge following the qualifying meet last Thursday in Eagle Grove. He posted an 18:02.52 for ninth place overall to easily punch his ticket for a final run of his high school career at Lakeside Golf Course.

The boys finished 12th as a team, with Des Moines Christian taking three of the top seven spots to win the team crown. Denver, Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck, Forest City and Dike-New Hartford followed them in the top five of 14 full teams. Carson Houg of DMC finished in 16:37.74 to win the individual gold.

Cowgirls volleyball one win from return to State

The Cowgirl volleyball team is once again just one win away from a three-peat trip to U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids and State after turning back Nevada last Wednesday night in Clarion. Set scores were 25-19, 25-19 and 25-17.

Team serving finished at 90.3 percent efficiency, with Morgan Middleton going 16 of 16 with one ace. Alaina Friesleben was 13 of 15 (one), Jadyn Jondle 11 of 11 and Kendall Lienemann 10 of 10 (two). Lexie Lane went 9 of 13 (three) and Nicole Waters 6 of 7.

Cowgirls are conference champs

In a match to decide the NCC title, the Cowgirl volleyball team made it look easy in a three-set sweep of visiting and ranked Humboldt. Scores were 25-10, 25-19 and 25-20.

Team serving was at 97.2 percent, with Kendall Lienenann at 20 of 20 (two aces), Lexie Lane at 15 of 17 (two) and Alaina Friesleben at 13 of 13 (one). Morgan Middleton had 25 kills in the attack, with Lienemann adding three and Friesleben two. Jadyn Jondle made 10 digs, Emma Conlon four and both Lienemann and Middleton two each. Friesleben went vertical for three solo blocks, Summer Traub two and Waters one.

Cowgirls volleyball defeats Gaels on the road

The Cowgirl volleyball express is rolling towards the postseason, picking up another three-set sweep to win over St. Edmond on their home floor. Scores were 25-13, 25-15 and 25-10.

Team serving was at 91.7 percent, with the always steady Lexie Lane at 16 of 18 with four aces. Nicole Waters was 13 of 13 (three), Alaina Friesleben 12 of 13 (three), Jadyn Jondle 10 of 11 (three), Morgan Middleton 9 of 9 (two) and Kendall Lienemann 6 of 8.

Cross country teams travel to Algona, Hampton

Clarion-Goldfield-Dows cross country participated in the Algona Invitational last Monday at the River Road course. Spencer used the strength of three finishers in the top four to win the varsity girls team title with just 56 points. They were followed in the top five of 15 complete teams by Mason City Public at 80, Charles City at 82, Okoboji at 116 and St. Edmond at 125. The Cowgirls did not field enough runners for a team score. Kiki Connell of Charles City took first with an 18:34 at the finish line.

Cross country teams run at tough Humboldt course

Sheldon Park, with its big hills, was the setting for a cross country meet at Humboldt last Monday. Gilbert won the girls varsity title on the tough course with just 84 points, followed in the top three of 18 full teams by Woodbury Central/Kingsley-Pierson with 91 and St. Edmond with 122. The Cowgirls were 18th. Ellie Meyer of Iowa Falls-Alden finished in 19:39.30 for first place.

Homecoming 2020 underway: “Time flies at CGD”

                It’s that magical time of year again! Homecoming is upon us! This week, September 21 to 25 is Clarion-Goldfield-Dows’s homecoming. Like has happened to most festivities amidst coronavirus concerns, plans had to be altered, but many fun activities and events are still scheduled.

CGD student speaks about what makes a great teacher

As staff at Clarion-Goldfield-Dows prepared to come back to school, Superintendent Joe Nelson asked a student, Paige German, to give her thoughts to the faculty about what makes a good teacher. As her former fifth grade teacher and Talented and Gifted Program Coordinator (which Paige is a part of), Tanja Jensen said, “She blew us away!” Paige’s speech is now being featured on the Iowa Department of Education’s website in addition to being viewed and shared hundreds of times across social media. Cowgirls Volleyball wins their Invitational once again

When the dust settled from the day of volleyball action last Saturday, one thing was crystal clear. All the visiting teams taking part in this year’s Cowgirl Invitational were no match for the third-rated (3A) home team as the Cowgirls easily took another title.

They shut out Eagle Grove 21-0 and 21-0. Jondle served at 21 of 21 with nine aces, while Lexie Lane went 20 of 20 with two. Morgan Middleton led with five kills, with Lane at four and Kendall Lienemann three.
