CGD spring sports getting underway soon

The ‘Year of COVID’ has been a year like no other, and it has affected nearly every facet of our lives. High school sports are certainly no exception, and the spring season was completely cancelled last year, and the summer ball teams faced an abbreviated season but the schools that wanted to at least did get a chance to compete.

Dance team holds annual camp

On Thursday, March 25, the CGDHS Dance Team held their 11th annual Dance Camp. This camp was open to all CGD students in 1st grade through 8th grade. Over 40 students attended the camp, which was held in the CGDHS gym. The campers learned two dances, which they performed for their parents and family members following the conclusion of the camp. In past years, this camp, which is the annual fundraiser for the Dance Team, is followed by a meal for sale as well as a showcase of the Dance Team's routines from the school year. Four CGD students compete at State Speech Contest

The IHSSA State Speech Contest was held at Forest City High School on Saturday, March 13, 2021. Senior Kara Legleiter, daughter of Rodney and Sally Legleiter, started the day with a prose reading titled “The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes” by Gary Rubinstein and Mark Pett. The judges gave her two division I ratings and one division II rating for an overall division I rating. Kara ended the day with a radio news broadcast for which she received all division II ratings.

Martinez, State lead Cowboy final season stats

The 2020-21 Cowboy basketball team finished 11-11 overall with a 5-8 North Central Conference record. Clear Lake on the league title at 12-2, followed by Algona at 11-3 and Humboldt at 9-4. The Cowboys finished fifth.

Four CGD speakers headed to state

Seniors Jaidyn Lockwood, Kara Legleiter, and Nicole Lorenzo, and freshman Ashley Fennel represented CGDHS at the IHSSA District Speech Contest in Hampton on Saturday, February 27. All four girls will go on to the State Speech Contest in Forest City on Saturday, March 13. Jaidyn and Ashley each received a one for their Literary Program and Poetry Reading respectively. Kara received a one on each of her performances in Radio News Broadcasting and Prose Reading. Nicole performed a Poetry Reading and a Literary Program; she received a one for each performance.

Kinnetz leads scoring, Middleton rebounding for 20-21 Cowgirl season

The Cowgirl basketball team finished the season with a 17-5 overall record and an 11-3 conference mark to tie them with Humboldt for second behind NCC champ Clear Lake. Three players earned spots on the All-Conference teams in balloting of the league coaches. Raven Kinnetz was a unanimous First Team selection, while Morgan Middleton made the Second Team and Jadyn Jondle the Third Team. All of them are seniors.

Three Cowboys make medal stand at state wrestling

When the final medals, along with team trophies, were handed out on Saturday night the Cowboys were able to have a nice showing of three wrestlers occupying a step on the 2A awards podium. Garrett Seaba (160) took fourth, Reed Abbas (138) was fifth and Kain Nelson (220) finished eighth after a long three days of mat action on the big stage of the largest high school tournament in the nation.

Cowgirls season ends in loss to Forest City

That’s the bad thing about the regional tournament…one loss knocks you out as you face the finality of the season. In the case of the Cowgirls, a very good season is suddenly over at the hands of Forest City in a 45-30 loss. The Cowgirls took a 15-10 lead into the second quarter, only to see the Indians outscore them 14 points to two to go up 24-17 at the break.

Cowboys sending four wrestlers to Des Moines

Following 2A district action last Saturday in Humboldt the Cowboy wrestling team will be represented by four individual qualifiers at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines this week. Making the trip to the big dance are Reed Abbas (138), Remi Hanson (145), Garrett Seaba (160) and Kain Nelson (220).
