Hunter safety class offered soon

Don't fret, spring is around the corner. Soon, wild turkeys will be gobbling, morel mushrooms will be popping and campgrounds will be opening. Wright County Conservation is hosting a hunter safety online class field day. April 3rd is the day to complete the in-person requirement for the online hunter safety class. It will be at Lake Cornelia Enclosed Shelter House, 1768 Obrien Ave, Clarion, Iowa starting at 9 a.m.

Virtual 4-H Baking Workshop held on Saturday, Feb. 20

The Wright County 4-H Intermediate Council hosted a virtual, interactive baking workshop for youth Saturday, Feb. 20. The workshop was held from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in partnership with Granny’s Mixing Bowl of Clarion. Granny’s Mixing Bowl provided several baking recipes that can be made from scratch for youth to try on their own. Participants spent the morning learning their way around the kitchen, participating in a Yoga warm up and making their own chocolate chip cookies from scratch.

City of Clarion reminds residents of new lift assist fee

In a resolution approved by the Clarion City Council in early February, a new fee schedule for the city was okayed. This included a new item- a $75 fee for lift assist calls. This fee is now in effect.

Clarion Ambulance Director Jennifer Littlejohn explained this fee was made necessary over the last year due to the increased calls for people needing help getting up. These calls come in often from elderly people who may live alone. Sometimes a person may slip and fall or have trouble getting out of a chair.

Vilsack confirmed as U.S. Secretary of Ag

Three weeks after his confirmation hearing, the Senate voted 92 to 7 to approve Tom Vilsack (D-IA) as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Vilsack, who is a former Iowa governor, served eight years in the same position during the Obama administration.

Vilsack’s confirmation received strong support from Republican senators, including the Iowa contingent. Both Senators Joni Ernst and Chuck Grassley voted to approve Vilsack after previously speaking out in support of him during the confirmation hearing.

Iowa prepares for rollout of third COVID-19 vaccine

Governor Kim Reynolds announced essential workers and individuals with disabilities may soon be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine.

Currently, the state is prioritizing first responders and child care workers for COVID vaccination, along with all Iowans age 65 and up. While it will still take some time to get the senior population completely vaccinated, the child care workers and first responders are progressing enough that the state may soon move on to the next step.

Clarion boutique moves up the road

Ali Disney keeps thinking bigger and better. Around five years ago, she started Italics Boutique as an online store that she was running from her basement in Clarion. Then in September of 2018, she opened a brick and mortar location on Main Street. Now, she has made another move just a block north. And both she and her customers are already relishing the expanded accommodations.

Disney has enjoyed clothes and fashion since she was a kid. The last several years, she has been living her dream as a business owner where she gets to share her passion with others.

C-G-D special election on Tuesday, Vote for Revenue Purpose Statement

On Tuesday, March 2, voters in the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Community School District will have a chance to go to the polls. Voters will choose whether or not to adopt a new Revenue Purpose Statement.

Supervisors hold short meeting

In a brief meeting of the Wright County Board of Supervisors on Monday morning, the board received their usual COVID update. Since March, there have been 1,785 positive cases in the county with 1,652 recovered. Sandy McGrath said the county had a period of very few positives, but she is seeing a small spike lately. She reiterated the need for masks.

Grassley holds Q&A session in Eagle Grove

A group of Eagle Grove small business owners, along with two Wright County Supervisors and City Administrator Bryce Davis, gathered to meet for a Q&A session with Senator Chuck Grassley last Thursday morning, Feb. 18. The stop was one of several others Grassley made last week in an effort to spend time listening to his constituents around Iowa.
