Quality time results in fair time success

Jonathan Koester has been a member of the Troy Toppers/Wright Warriors 4-H Club for nine years.  Over the course of those years, he’s entered many projects in the Wright County Fair, but there’s no question he saved the best for last. And to think, he almost didn’t get the chance to show off the fruits of his labor because of COVID-19. But even if he hadn’t, he still achieved something much greater than a finished project - time with his grandpa.

Spread of COVID-19 continues to accelerate in Iowa

The spread of COVID-19 continues to accelerate as last week saw the number of new cases reach its highest point since the start of the pandemic.

     As of Sunday, July 12, there have been 35,070 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the state, increasing the 31,353 total from the week prior by 3,717 cases. Not only is this a new high in the number of new weekly cases, but it marks a significant uptick in the rate of new cases being discovered.

Board approves loan for new dental practice

At the Monday meeting of the Wright County Board of Supervisors, Cindy Litwiller, Economic Development Director, presented to the board for approval a FmHA relending loan to Wright County Family Dentistry in the amount of $150,000. Dr. Heather Anderson, who is heading the general practice dental office, spoke briefly. She noted she started practicing in the area in 2014, was out of the area for a while and is now happy to be back. “I’m excited to be back and am looking forward to serving those in Wright County,” she said.

Library doors closed but imaginations open for summer reading

As all businesses and public entities have worked to adapt to the new normal the last few months, libraries too have faced difficult decisions. Some libraries across Iowa have reopened but many have decided to largely stay closed as COVID-19 continues to be a concern. This decision was made even more difficult for libraries as summer brings many fun opportunities and programs for patrons, particularly children. Like other area libraries, the Clarion Public Library is rising up to meet the challenge of delivering summer programming even during this unusual time.

This week should have been one of the most fun weeks of the summer in Wright County.  There should have been row after row of cars parked out at the Wright County Fairgrounds.

Lake Cornelia celebrates the Fourth!

Despite events being a little different this year, the Lake Cornelia Fourth of July celebration was still a big hit. The weather was hot, dry and sunny all weekend which brought plenty of people to the lake for the fun.  

Friday evening, the festive fireworks show could be seen reflecting on the glassy lake. 4 G’s Pyrotechnics again put on an impressive show. People watched from docks, the beach, and from their boats on the lake.

Wright County 4-H/FFA senior salute

Each year the Wright County Junior District Fair recognizes their graduating seniors who have participated in 4-H and FFA events.  Despite the cancellation of the public portion of the fair, they are still recognizing these achievers who have given their all to their respective programs over the years.  This year, they will be saying goodbye to six members.  A few of them agreed to share some of their parting thoughts with us.

The Wright County Fair Board would like to congratulate our three scholarship recipients for this year!  We will highlight each one below - Congratulations to the Class of 2020!!

Our first scholarship recipient for this year is Jonathan Koester - Jonathan graduated from Eagle Grove High School and will be attending Iowa Central Community College in the Fall to study Welding Technology.

New COVID-19 cases on the rise

New cases of COVID-19 are spiking up in Iowa after a few weeks on the decline.

     As of Sunday, July 5, there have been 31,353 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the state, increasing the 28,489 total from the week prior by 2,864 cases. This continues from last week's up-tick, with an increase of 300 more new cases from the week before.

“In good times and in bad” -Couple shares effects of COVID-19 on their wedding plans

“IN GOOD TIMES AND IN BAD...” these words have been spoken by hundreds of thousands of couples on the most special day of their lives.  This phrase from traditional wedding vows reminds couples that some days will be better than others.  But Brandy Kling and her fiance D’Angelo Dismute of Eagle Grove couldn’t have anticipated that the “bad” would come before they were even united in marriage - not in their relationship, but as a result of the worldwide pandemic known as COVID-19.
