Ridiculous Dayz in Clarion

Though the thermometer pushed into the 90s last Friday and Saturday, things were still a little Ridiculous in Clarion. The annual Clarion Chamber sponsored event, Ridiculous Dayz featured crazy sales throughout town and even a few food trucks. Pictured, the Taco Shack (right), was cooking up ridiculously tasty taco, burritos and more, with the Twiins Ice Cream Shoppe offering treats to cool everyone down. Chamber Director Ali Disney said that this is the first Chamber retail event for several months as other regular events were canceled due to the COVID pandemic.

Supervisors work on Agribusiness Park matters

In the weekly COVID-19 update from the Emergency Operations Center, Sandy McGrath reported to the Wright County Board of Supervisors that, as of Monday morning, there were 429 positive cases in the county with 3,038 people having been tested. She added that there are 370 listed as having recovered, but that number lags a bit and she had personally reported 20 more recoveries over the weekend. McGrath said they are working with businesses to encourage signage about wearing masks. “We all have to do our part,” she emphasized. “Stay out of large crowds and wear a mask.”

The number of cases of COVID-19 reported daily across the country continues to increase. On Friday, July 17th a new single-day record was set with just shy of 75,000 new cases reported in the country and the overall trend remains upward. The number of new cases and hospitalizations in Iowa also continue to rise. Our current number of cases is similar to the prior peak in early May.

The effects of COVID-19 have been felt around the world.  It has changed the lives of men, women, children, families, sports teams, businesses, and so many more.  It has even temporarily taken away the chance for our American Veterans to go on the trip of a lifetime that they are so deserving of - a day in Washington, D.C. visiting military monuments constructed in their honor.

COVID-19 outbreaks spike in long term care facilities

Governor Kim Reynolds extended the State Public Health Emergency declaration for another 30 day period on Friday, July 24.

     The extension was expected as Reynolds has previously stated anticipating continuing the public health emergency through at least the remainder of the year.

     The new proclamation extends most of the currently existing public health measures, such as distance requirements for public facing businesses, which have been in place since the state re-opened.

Grassley finally hits Wright County on 99 County Tour

                 U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley (IA-R) greeted people last Thursday with elbow or fist bumps. Grassley, who was originally scheduled to be in the county in mid-March, finally made his way to Wright County last week as part of his whirlwind tour of the state during a two-week recess from the Senate. Wright County was his 27th county visited in two weeks with two more planned later last week.

Businesses in Clarion and surrounding areas encouraged to apply for microloans

“The heart of a small town is their small businesses,” said Steve Simonin, the President of the Clarion Economic Development Corporation (CEDC). He also pointed out what we all know- many businesses are still struggling with the economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic. With that in mind, various national, state, and local entities have sought ways to aid businesses. One local option now available is the Clarion Economic Development COVID-19 Microloan Program. Businesses are now encouraged to apply for the program.

Governor stops in Clarion briefly last week

Last week was a busy one in Wright County for politician visits. On Tuesday, Governor Kim Reynolds, along with Lieutenant Governor Adam Gregg, made a low-key stop in Clarion. They stopped in town for lunch as they traveled between engagements in Webster City and Kanawha. The group hit up grounded where they chatted with the owners, the Solis family, in addition to customers. Danny Solis said that Reynolds asked how they have been weathering the last few months. He added that they thanked her for making small business grants available, which grounded had received.

Supervisors establish speed limit near Agribusiness Park

At the Monday morning meeting of the Wright County Board of Supervisors, Jeremy Abbas, Assistant to the County Engineer, presented two resolutions for the board to consider. The first was to establish a speed limit on Clay Avenue in the Agribusiness Park. The board approved a 25 mph speed limit on the road between 320th Street and 330th Street. They also approved a stop sign at the intersection of Clay Ave and C-56 (320th Street).

Governor Reynolds orders schools to hold in-person classes as COVID-19 spikes across the state

Governor Kim Reynolds issued a new emergency proclamation on Friday, July 17 declaring that schools must prioritize having in-person classes when the school year begins next month.

     "One of the most important milestones in our recovery effort is getting Iowa students back to school," said Reynolds. "While we all know that the school year will be different than it's ever been before, it's critical that we prioritize getting children back into the classroom safely and responsibly."
