Emotions run high at last week’s WC Board of Health meeting- Decertification of home care and layoffs topics of discussion

Even though the meeting took place at 7 a.m., several members of the public tuned into the Wright County Board of Health meeting via Zoom last Thursday. The big topic of interest was again the county’s decision to decertify skilled home care services that are reimbursed by Medicare, Medicaid, the VA and insurance beginning November 1 and the layoffs of staff that will result from this.

C-G-D informs parents of first COVID case in district

Late last week, parents in the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows school district received word that a student at the high school has tested positive for COVID-19. This was the first case of the virus reported in the district. The district’s message also stipulated, “Please understand, as we must protect the privacy of all CGD students and staff, we cannot share further details about this individual. We will remain in contact with the individual to provide our support and ensure they are not contagious before returning to school.”

Swanson takes home Reserve Champion

Congratulations to Delia Swanson for being awarded the Middleweight Reserve Champion Market Gilt at the 2020 Iowa State Fair Special Edition FFA Show. Her hog was bred by Morgan Genetics. Delia was one of 265 FFA members who exhibited 567 animals in the FFA Swine Shows judged August 14 and 15 at the event held at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Delia is pictured here with her family. CGD student speaks about what makes a great teacher

As staff at Clarion-Goldfield-Dows prepared to come back to school, Superintendent Joe Nelson asked a student, Paige German, to give her thoughts to the faculty about what makes a good teacher. As her former fifth grade teacher and Talented and Gifted Program Coordinator (which Paige is a part of), Tanja Jensen said, “She blew us away!” Paige’s speech is now being featured on the Iowa Department of Education’s website in addition to being viewed and shared hundreds of times across social media. Absentee ballots safe and secure in Wright County says auditor

As the November 3 general election looms ever closer, voters in Wright County and beyond are weighing their options for how to cast their ballot. For some, this decision has been made more difficult due to worries about coronavirus and recent concerns with the postal service. Given those concerns, Auditor Betty Ellis says that voting by mailed-in absentee ballot is safe and secure for Wright County voters.

City shows off pilot plant for water treatment facility

The meeting of the Clarion City Council on Tuesday, September 1 was again short with only one agenda item. The council approved the city street finance report. City Administrator Clint Middleton noted in his written report that he viewed a webinar on state COVID relief funds which can be received for Emergency Response costs that went above the normal budgeted money. Middleton said, because the city did not incur such costs, they will not be pursuing the application.

COVID spike continues in Iowa

The increase in COVID-19 spread continues in Iowa as the state sets national records for new cases.

"Iowa had the highest rate of increase in COVID-19 cases nationally last week, and the fifth highest positivity rate in the country," said Governor Kim Reynolds at a press conference on Wednesday, September 2.

“It’s what we do. We turn people’s lights on”- Prairie Energy crews help restore power after derecho

Even as residents of Wright County breathed a sigh of relief three weeks ago after escaping direct impacts of the now infamous “derecho,” some in our area were just gearing up. For several employees of the Clarion-based Prairie Energy Cooperative, the storm was a call to action. In the weeks after the storm, the local cooperative sent nine linemen across the state to help restore power to those affected.
