‘There are a lot of ways to be a mother’

Don’t forget to send your mom flowers or a card because Mother’s Day is coming up this Sunday! All of our moms are wonderful women and deserve heaps of love and praise every day of the year but especially on Mother’s Day. In anticipation of the holiday this weekend, we spoke to a few special women at different stages of their motherhood adventures. We asked the ladies about their families, lessons taught and learned from motherhood and what they enjoy doing on Mother’s Day. They shared their thoughts in their own words.

In a year that has been challenging for all, especially for the health and safety sectors of society, it is important to remember those who serve and volunteer in those areas. National Police Week is May 9-15 and National EMS Week is May 16-22. With that in mind, we hope to recognize those departments in the next few weeks.

Elm Lake cabin burns during Saturday’s ‘red flag warning’

Saturday’s hot, dry, and windy conditions combined into dangerous fire conditions in Wright County. It was during these conditions that Manie and Elmarie Nel learned that their family cabin at Elm Lake had burned down.

Elmarie said the fire was apparently started when a neighbor’s fire that had been started on Friday reignited Saturday and spread out of control. The Nels were not at the cabin during the fire. Though they have another home in Clarion, they do consider the cabin their “home away from home.” The cabin was a total loss due to the fire.

County conservation areas ‘bloom’ with activity for the spring/summer

Wright County Conservation employees are embarking on a number of events and activities for the 2021 season. The team includes Director Eric Rector; Park Rangers Jeremiah Feltz and Brady Brott; Naturalist Sam Hanson; summer employees Kelton Gross and Brian Ring, as well as three high school students. The county ‘tends’ nearly 40 parcels of land across the county; seven of which are owned by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The most active area is at Lake Cornelia.

Supervisors talk drainage district reclassification

In the COVID update during Monday’s Wright County Board of Supervisors meeting, Sandy McGrath noted that the county was at 1,823 cases as of Monday. She added that healthcare personnel throughout the county has administered 9,748 vaccine doses. 36.4% of the county is now vaccinated. Clinics continue throughout the county with earlier morning hours and evening hours now available. McGrath said that the county did receive more Johnson & Johnson doses that they will be making available soon.

CGD students participate in art show

Wednesday, April 21 was the 2021 North Central Conference Art Show. Several Clarion-Goldfield-Dows High School students participated in the art show this year under the direction of high school art teacher Heather Walker. There are eight schools in CGD’s conference.

CGD students create ‘Earthy’ chalk art

On Earth Day, in addition to cleaning a park and completing school projects, CGD’s Talented and Gifted (TAG) middle school students got a little artsy for the special day. They participated in the Water Rocks! Earth Week Chalk Challenge. “We saw tremendous participation and creativity in the Chalk Challenge last year and are eager to see what Iowans will create and submit this year,” said Ann Staudt, Water Rocks! Director.

CGD Elementary Principal named ‘Shining Star’

               The Prairie Lakes Area Education Agency recently name Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Elementary Principal Tricia Rosendahl as one of their “Shining Stars.” Prairie Lakes Area Education Agency is a state organization providing educational services to 14 counties in north central Iowa.

WC Extension Office & First Lutheran Food Pantry offers free gardening programs, volunteer opportunities

The Wright County Extension office has partnered with the First Lutheran Food Pantry to increase access to fresh produce for food pantry shoppers by creating a community garden.  The Food Pantry Community Garden is located at the community garden plots north of the Iowa Specialty Hospital.  This effort also includes free educational programming, to both children and adults, to help community members increase their self-sustainability in gardening.  Volunteer opportunities are also available to all community members interested in learning new skills or using their expertise to increase acces
