Prices going up at landfill
It will cost more to dump trash and debris at the Wright County Transfer Station starting July 1. The landfill board of directors approved a price increase at its March meeting.
The minimum dumping fee of $20 will remain the same. But large loads will rise from $60 per ton right now, to $74 per ton on July 1. Officials said this is the first price increase in nine years.
The cost to recycle an appliance will remain at $20, but the fee for electronics will rise by $5, to $20, starting July 1. The price of a recycling container will be $15.
Landfill Director Travis Connor reported that the amount of trash generated this winter has been higher than usual, mostly due to debris from chicken barns southeast of Clarion that were destroyed during the storm in December.
The board elected officers for the year: Ron Bailey (Rowan) chairman; Mike Nail (Clarion) vice chairman; Alan Mattison (Belmond) executive officer; and Barb Schaefer (Goodell) executive officer. Other members are Jeanie Arends (Alexander), Craig Russell (Dows), John Leist (Galt), Chris Peterson (Goldfield), Bruce Rholl (Woolstock) and Karl Helgevold (rural representative).
The board agreed on pay raises of ten percent for transfer station employees.
Landfill officials wanted to remind citizens about the types of items not accepted at the transfer station: free liquids of any kind, toxic materials of any kind (lead paint, paint thinner, lawn and garden chemicals, medical waste, etc.), machinery, yard waste, dead animals, manure, burn barrels, bulk fluorescent tubes from businesses, or chunks of rubble larger than 18 inches.
Tires and appliances can be recycled. Call 515-532-2984 for details.
Coming soon will be hazardous waste collection days for homeowners. The landfill has obtained a trailer that can be brought to member towns for hazardous waste drop-offs. The first such day will be May 14 in Goodell. Collection days in other towns will be announced later.
