Mildred Plunkett, the daughter of J.H. John Henry and Pauline ( Kautzky) Plunkett, was born June 26, 1923, at Fort Dodge, IA. She lived in Eagle Grove, IA, with her family at attended Sacred Hearth Catholic Church and School until high school. Millie then attended Eagle Grove High School where she was active in choir and was voted band Queen. She loved her tap dancing lessons and was quite good. Millie was quite proud of the beautiful clothes that her mother made for her. Losing her father to pneumonia during her high school years was hard for the family, but her mother provided for the family with her sewing.

Meeting Doug Nelson, a handsome Goldfield boy, while attending junior college changed her life. They married and had 7 children, mom's greatest joy she always said. She was a busy mom for many years, being active in all the kids school affairs. Millie was a member of the Sew-So Club, Bayview Club and Memory Lane, along with enjoying her many friends in Goldfield. Mom enjoyed her homes at Lake Cornelia and spending winters in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

A big move came in 2010 when mom and dad sold their home in Goldfield and moved to Belmond. Dad passed away in 2013 and she continued to live in Belmond where she enjoyed neighbors and friends.

At age 90, she took a bus tour to Savannah, Georgia, with her daughters. She was thrilled to be able to go. After two major surgeries shortly after returning her health began to decline. Losing her sight was devastating for her, but she continued to live at home and had a very positive attitude. Her strength finally gave out and she entered hospice care after a fall at home. She held on for 5 days until she heard all 7 children give her permission to go to God.

She will be remembered as a loving mother, her family was the light of her life. She could throw together a homemade chocolate cake in her sleep and made delicious pies. She sewed for us, cut our hair, taught us to drive, counseled and consoled us and always took us to church and catechism class. In all our minds, she was a "Mother Like No Other."

Those left to cherish her memory and legacy include her children: Kathleen Nelson, Belmond, IA, Michael (Kaaren) Nelson, Bettendorf, IA, Susan (Dan) Girard, Belmond, IA, Thomas (Rick Goodhead) Nelson, Tulsa, OK, Geoffrey (Barb) Nelson, Bettendorf, IA, Gregory (Cathy) Nelson, Davenport, IA, Scott (Monica) Nelson, Davenport, IA; Grandchildren: Kara Nelson, Dana (Justin) Holstein, Chad (Meredith) Lenning, Matthew (Barbara) Lenning, Melissa (Tim) Slapnicher, Mark (Stacy) Lenning, Collin Nelson, Seth Nelson, Blake Nelson, Brett Nelson; Great-grandchildren: Kailey, Bryce, and Zane Vitt; Jacob and Olivia Holstein; Malia, Micah, and Amara Slapnicher; Carter and Grant Lenning; Elizabeth and Natalee Lenning; Dylan and Ellie Lenning.
