Fern Spellmeyer

Fern Luvay Spellmeyer, 75, of Clarion passed away Tuesday, December 14, 2021 at Van Diest Medical Center in Webster City, Iowa.

Services for Fern Spellmeyer have been postponed until a later date.

Fern was the daughter of Theodore and Margaret (Wagner) Meyer of Belmond, and she attended school with the class of 1964. After high school, she earned a degree from North Iowa Area Community College.

On April 7, 1973 she was united in marriage to Mark Spellmeyer at Calvary Baptist Church. To this union Meghan Jean (Spellmeyer) Dow was born.

After graduation, Fern worked at Central Soya in Belmond for 16 years. She worked in the Clarion School System as secretary for the high school, and Administrative Secretary to the Superintendent for 25 years before retiring in 2011. She loved working with administration, teachers, staff and the children she met.

Fern was a member of the Church of Christ, Clarion. She helped when she was needed.

The most important thing to Fern was family. She loved spending time with her daughter and grandchildren. Traveling became second nature to her as she enjoyed the scenery and exploring favorite shops in Iowa, Sedalia and St. Louis. She loved to sew, quilt, preserve fruits and vegetables for the winter months, and loved baking pies for her family. Christmas was a big holiday. She decorated about ten trees each year with Hallmark ornaments and family heirlooms. She cooked and baked in anticipation of family gathering. During the pandemic, she kept herself busy designing and sewing quilts. Her favorite was an American flag that meant a lot to her. She cherished her new and longtime friends.

Fern is survived by her husband Mark Spellmeyer of Clarion; daughter Meghan (Kent) Dow of Manchester, Missouri; two grandchildren, Brady Dow and Kennedy Dow; sister Marge (Stan) Pearson; brothers Vernon (Caroline) Meyer, Roger (Linda) Meyer, and Richard (Loree) Meyer; brothers-in-law Michael (Diane) Spellmeyer and Kevin Spellmeyer; sister-in-law Debra Spellmeyer; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Alfred Meyer and Gary Meyer, and sister Beverly Hulsing.
