Like the western, which we discussed in a previous edition of this column, the war film has been a constant in cinema from the very beginning. Armed conflict has always translated well to the screen for a number of reasons: the action rivets audiences, the trials and tribulations of the individuals involved raise deep moral questions about duty, honor and why wars are fought in the first place, and they offer us a chance to educate ourselves about history we may not otherwise learn in a classroom.
