Wrestlers take team title at Aplington-Parkersburg

On the strength of four individual champions, the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows wrestling just edged past Crestwood of Cresco to take the team title at the Keith Vry Invitational last Saturday at Aplington Parkersburg High School. The Cowboys finished with 194 points, followed in the top five of a 14-team field by Crestwood with 185.5, Don Bosco with 173, Sumner-Fredricksburg with 90 and Benton Community with 84.5.

Connor Johnson (132), Tanner Abbas (145), Mason Carpenter (182) and Spencer Trenary (285) all claimed gold for the red and black. Johnson used two falls to gain the championship match, where he then took an 8-6 overtime win over Wettengel of Don Bosco. Abbas used a fall and major decision to move into the finals, where he took a 9-7 win over Steffen of Crestwood. Carpenter scored a pin and decision for early wins, then stuck Maitland of A-P in 3:30 for the bracket win. Trenary had a bye, then won by fall to reach the finals where he pinned Ahrends of Dike-NH in just 43 seconds.

Finishing second were Tyler Stein, Reed Abbas, Reymundo Vasquez and Colby Lienemann. Salvador Fregoso was the lone third-place Cowboy finisher.
