Larry Conlon

Lawrence “Larry” T. Conlon, 84, of Clarion passed away Monday, January 1, 2024 at his home in Clarion.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at St. John’s Catholic Church, 608 2nd Avenue Northeast in Clarion. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Clarion.  

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 5, 2024 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Ewing Funeral Home, 1801 Central Avenue East in Clarion, with a Rosary beginning at 4:30 PM.

At Larry’s family’s request, please wear your favorite sport’s team attire to the visitation and funeral. Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Research Hospital

Lawrence Thomas, son of Thomas and Catherine (Conway), was born on February 24, 1939 in Ames. Larry went to grade school at St. John’s Catholic School in Clarion and then moved to California, where his dad ran a donut shop. Larry met the love of his life when he was at Garden Grove High School. After he graduated high school, he came back to Iowa and worked with his brother, Bob, at Super Valu Bakery in Spencer. 

Larry was united in marriage to Janice Scanlan on May 2, 1960 at Saint Columban Catholic Church in Garden Grove, California. The couple settled in Spencer, Iowa, where they lived for several years before moving to Clarion in 1968. Larry and Jan made Clarion their forever home, where they raised their seven children and owned and operated Conlon’s Bakery until 1991. In 1992, Larry worked at Sports Graphic’s until retiring in 2010.

In his younger years, Larry enjoyed fishing, especially in Canada. Larry and Jan enjoyed traveling and took several memorable trips together. Larry was a supportive father and grandfather, he hardly ever missed a sporting event or dance recital. He loved watching sports and was a huge Notre Dame fan.

Larry is survived by his daughter Mary (Dick) Stumpf of Clarion; son Mike (Luci) Conlon of Henderson, Nevada; daughter Maggie (Rey) Solis of Clarion; daughter Karen (Tom) Senn of Ankeny; son Patrick Conlon of Clarion; daughter Kate (Craig) Orness of Humboldt; and son Tom (Nikki) Conlon of Clarion; grandchildren TJ (Rachel) Stumpf and their children Jaxon, Lincoln, & Hudson; Jason (Sam) Stumpf and their children Oliver & Harper; Sean (Christina) Conlon, Annie Conlon and her children Mia, Milania, Addy, Nora, Vera & Olivia; Becky Conlon and her children Carson, Kohl & Blaire; Maxine Solis; Dominque Solis; Donyale Griggs and her children Ryleigh, Montiveous & Kenneth; Reynaldo (Claudine) Solis and their children Michelle, Cierra & Sophia; Danny (Meghann) Solis and their children Niklas, Matheu, Treytn, Zakary & Noelle; Nathaniel (Sabrina) Solis and their children Xavier, Daenerys, Theodore & Kathleen; Sam (Savannah) Solis and their children Messiah, Josiah, PJ & Isla; Jessica (Tom) Bartello and their daughter Eden; Sara Klinefelter and her children Oliver & Graham; Holly Nelson (Colton); Andrew Senn; Anna Axotis; Andrew Conlon; Shane Conlon (Isabel) and their daughter Francesca; Te’a Conlon; Josiah Conlon; Michael (Melanie) Orness and their son Henry; Thomas (Jesselyn) Orness; Abbie Orness; Will Orness; Derek Conlon; Emma Conlon; and Jack Conlon; sister Teresa Ann Powers; along with numerous other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Jan Conlon; parents Thomas and Catherine Conlon; parents-in-law Vince and Zetta Scanlan; granddaughter Alicia Solis in infancy; brother Robert (Virginia) Conlon; sister Ruth (Vince) Kleigl; and brother-in-law Dick Powers.
