Gerald Cayler

Gerald E. Cayler, 84, of Galt, passed away on Friday, December 8, 2023 at Clarion Wellness and Rehabilitation Center.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at Ewing Funeral Home, 1801 Central Avenue East in Clarion.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home on Saturday.

Gerald E. Cayler was born on May 21, 1939 on his family ranch in South Dakota to Sammy and E. Jane (Toffelmeir) Cayler. He attended school in South Dakota before moving to Williams where he graduated school. After high school, Jerry attended Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls. He joined the service in 1960.

On December 22, 1962, Jerry was united in marriage to Marilynn Pallesen in Jewell. The couple lived in various places before settling in Galt in 1974 where he was Mayor for 30 years. Jerry owned Big A Autoparts with his wife, brother Ron and sister-in-law Jerrine in Clarion for many years until he retired.

Jerry loved vintage stock car racing. He traveled the Midwest to different races. He loved his #40 car! He raced his last race at 80 years old. Jerry was a member of Midwest Jalopies Race Club and was their first Hall of Fame inductee. Jerry also enjoyed his horses, Vizslas and pheasant hunting. His family was most important to him. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandkids.

Jerry is survived by his son Matt (Julie) Cayler of North Liberty, daughter Robin (Doug) Bisel of Dundas, Minnesota; grandchildren Sam Cayler, Sydney Cayler, Mekenzie Bisel, and Nate Bisel; sister-in-law Jerrine Cayler of Galt; niece Karen (Rick) Ehmen and their children Rhett and Reid; nephew Rob Cayler and his son Lucas; and many extended family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his wife Marilynn in 2014; brother Ron; and his parents.
