Cowboy wrestling team second at NCC tournament

After having won it in recent years, the C-G-D wrestling team still made a respectable showing at this year’s NCC wrestling tournament on January 25 in Iowa Falls. The team not only finished in second place, but crowned two champions in Reed Abbas (145) and Garrett Seaba (152).

The home team Iowa Falls-Alden won the title with 198.5 points, just edging out the Cowboys at 192.5 points. The finishing order behind those two was as follows: Humboldt 187.5, Hampton-Dumont/CAL 175, Algona 158, Webster City 111.5, Clear Lake 102 and St. Edmond with 14.

Abbas started out with a fall in 1:42 over Jones (Clear Lake), then took a 7-2 win over Cornejo (H-D/CAL). He pinned Howland (IF-A) in 1:43 in the finals. Seaba began his run to the medal stand with a win by fall in 3:46 over Rieck (C.Lake), then stuck Estlund (W. City) in just 30 seconds in the semi’s. He won his bracket with a narrow 9-8 decision over Burke (IF-A).

Tyler Stein (113) took second place, with Remi Hanson (138), Bryce Allen (160), Camden Hanson (182) and Kain Nelson (220) all finishing on the bronze step of the awards stand. Stein started with a bye, then won 7-2 over Currier (C. Lake). He lost a 5-1 decision to Showalter (H-D/CAL) in the finals. Hanson opened with a fall in 3:40 over Vankham (W. City), then lost to Barkema (H-D/CAL) 4-2 in overtime. He came through the backside of the bracket to pin Smith (C. Lake) in 1:44 and win by an 11-0 major decision over Jensen (Humboldt) for his placing.
