Alvin Van Wyk

Alvin (Al) Van Wyk, 76 of Cedar Rapids, went home to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, April 1, 2023, at The Gardens of Cedar Rapids.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at 11:30 a.m. at Teahen Funeral Home. Pastor Terry Van Wyk will be officiating. Burial will be at Waveland Cemetery, Prairie City at a later date.

Alvin Leroy Van Wyk was born on October 10, 1946, son of Gerrit Jacob Jr. and Margaret (Van Dusseldorp) Van Wyk in Newton. He graduated from Prairie City High School in 1964. 

Al was united in marriage to Kay Etta Olson on June 18, 1965, in Prairie City.

Al was a farmer and welder/fabricator at Dowden’s until 1970. He worked at Hagie Manufacturing from 1970 to 2013 when he retired as an Engineering Manager. He always made time for his son’s whether that was Boy Scouts, sports, concerts, or family vacations. He also enjoyed working with his tools, tinkering, and being on the computer, but most of all loved spending time with family and friends.

Al is survived by two sons, Terry (Diane) Van Wyk of Cedar Rapids and Doug (Tracy) Van Wyk of Clarion; eight grandchildren, Amanda (Ryan) Davis, Marissa (Gabe) Ackerson, Karissa Lockhart, Spencer (Allyson) Van Wyk, Hunter Van Wyk, Makenna Van Wyk, Zoey Green and Drake Green; seven great-grandchildren, Kelly, Ashlynn, Briar, Aubree, Rohan, Beckett and Aniyah; Sister, Maxine Cowman, Brothers-in-law, Ken (Kathy) Olson and Val (Phyllis) Olson, special friend, Elaine Anderson, and many nieces & nephews. 

Al was preceded in death by his parents, wife Kay Van Wyk, and brother Gary Van Wyk.

The family would like to thank The Gardens of Cedar Rapids and Mercy Hospice for their compassion and care.
