Wright County schoolhouse makes appearance in national journal

In January 2017, former Clarion resident Sandra Sellers Hanson received the Modern Language Association’s prestigious Francis Andrew March Award, which recognizes outstanding teachers of English.

“It was a lovely cap to my career as a professor and English Department Chairperson at LaGuardia Community College,” Hanson said in a family newsletter. “Not long ago, I received a cap on the cap!”

Doug Steward, editor of the MLA’s ADE Bulletin, extensively quoted Hanson’s award acceptance speech in an article in the 155th Bulletin. In her speech, Hanson talked about her experience learning in a one-room school house in Wright County, Wall Lake #2. As a result, a photo of the schoolhouse was featured on the cover of the edition.
