Wright County Monitor welcomes Bridget Shileny as new editor

My name is Bridget Shileny, and I’m so pleased to be the new news editor and reporter for the Wright County Monitor. Since my name will soon be appearing above news stories, I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself to our readers.

I am only recently a resident of the great state of Iowa. I grew up in South Dakota in a tiny speck of a town called Lake City in the northeastern corner of the state. I drove to school 20 miles away and was involved with many activities, ranging from sports and 4-H to yearbook and drama. I loved to hit the lakes in the area and spend time fishing, boating, and swimming.

After I graduated, I meandered down Interstate 29 to South Dakota State University in Brookings. Go Jackrabbits! I had always enjoyed reading and writing, which led me to pursue a degree in English. I also gave over my life to the college forensics team, traveling around the country for public speaking and oral interpretation competitions. I briefly toyed with the idea of going to law school after graduating, but I enjoyed SDSU so much, I didn’t want to leave! I was given a great opportunity to attend graduate school there as well as a teaching assistantship. I taught lots of different composition and literature classes as I worked towards my master’s degree specializing in English Literature. I finished that degree in 2010 after completing my thesis on women in King Arthur stories. I stayed on at SDSU for several more years as full-time instructor.
