Wrestlers take team title at Guthrie Center

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows wrestling team took yet another tournament title last Saturday at the Tiger Invitational held at Guthrie Center. With only two champions, 120-pounder Josh Portillo and 145-pounder Brady Brott, the Cowboys still compiled enough strong placings to tally 196 points. That would be a comfortable margin over second place AHSTW (Avoca) with 135.5. Rounding out the top five, of the large 23-team field, were Ogden with 115, Underwood with 105 and Van Meter with 101.5.

Portillo earned his gold with two technical falls to push him into the finals. Once there, he turned in a 17-6 major decision over Appleseth of Panorama-Panora. Brott pinned his way to the title, starting out with a quick 55 seconds fall and ending with a 4:56 fall over McCloud of Ogden for the championship.

Tanner Abbas (138) was the lone second-place finisher. He won his first three matches by fall, the fastest in 2:26, but was then pinned by Jennings of Underwood in the title match. Mason Carpenter (170) was third for the day, coming back from a quarterfinal round pin to win a major decision and a fall on the consolation side. He won the third-place match by a 17-2 technical fall over Lundberg of Southeast Valley.
