Whirlwind final minutes swing to C-G-D

A flurry of scoring in the final 2 minutes, 46 seconds of the Class 2A District 2 finale between a pair of previous one-win teams ended With Clarion-Goldfield-Dows/CAL pulling out a 28-25 victory on Friday, Oct. 20 at Hampton.

Eight lead changes, including four in that time span, had everyone’s heads on a swivel in this rivalry game.

But in the end, it was tough to game-plan for a back-up quarterback who had never played the position before.

Cowboys’ starter Jaace Weidemann went down with an injury and his brother Will, took over, leading them down the field quickly for a pair of scores in the final 1:48.

“The whole game was crazy for us,” C-G-D/CAL coach Newt Lingenfelter said. “We had several injuries throughout the game, starting with my right guard going down with an ankle injury and then our quarterback, Jaace Weidemann, who had played the position all year every snap, went down. We’d had some others take snaps in practice at quarterback, but we decided to put in Will and he’d never played quarterback."
