Suzanne Deimerly, 80, of Clarion passed away Monday, November 22, 2021 at MercyOne Hospice House in Johnston, Iowa.

Private funeral services will be held.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 26, 2021 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM without family present, at Ewing Funeral Home, 1801 Central Avenue East in Clarion. Rosary service will began at 4:00 PM with scriptural wake beginning at 5:30 PM.

Those in attendance will be asked to follow social distancing guidelines and encouraged to wear a face covering.

Suzanne was born on August 31, 1941, in Clarion, Iowa, to Raymond and Margaret Stackland Deimerly. She was the oldest of their five children, and grew up on the family farm in Wall Lake township.

She attended Wall Lake # 2 through the eighth grade and graduated from Clarion High School in 1958. Suzanne received her Bachelor of Arts degree and Iowa teaching certificate from the State College of Iowa (now the University of Northern Iowa) in 1962. The remarkable thing about Suzanne’s education was how compressed it was. She started kindergarten at the age of 4, completed kindergarten and first grade in the same year, graduated from high school when she was 16, and began teaching at the age of 20.

Suzanne was a lifelong educator. She taught third and fourth grades in the Algona Community School District for 39 years. Upon her retirement she moved to Clarion where she privately tutored many students in reading, language arts, and math.

She was an active member of St. John’s Catholic Church, particularly with the church’s social justice work, and she served as a Heartland Museum board member. Suzie was an avid reader and had a book wherever she went just in case she had some “downtime.” She followed all sports but was partial to the Chicago Cubs. Suzie also enjoyed cooking (her family were benefactors of her homemade jams, pickles, and chex mixes), collecting cookbooks, crocheting, her flower garden, and traveling. Throughout the years she spent much time with her sister Rosemary in Chicago and traveled throughout the United States and Europe.

Suzanne’s nieces and nephews will fondly remember the trips she took them on to Des Moines and Chicago to see the Cubs play and go to the museums, zoos, and other attractions. She was a special aunt, almost another grandmother, to her nieces Erica and Blaire.

Suzanne was preceded in death by her parents and sister Rosemary Deimerly.

She is survived by siblings Trish(Kent) Perry of Ankeny, Joan (Dennis) Dougherty of Belmond, and Robert (Kathy) Deimerly of Clarion; nephews Mark, Phil, Brad, and Eric Dougherty; nieces Erin Perry, Erica Lindaman, and Blaire Blake; seventeen great-nieces and -nephews; and her beloved cat Tillie.

Suzanne’s family wishes to extend appreciation to her many home care providers following her diagnosis of dementia. In lieu of flowers, we request that memorial contributions be made to the Wright County Humane Society, Heartland Museum in Clarion, or the Johnston Hospice House, 5820 Winwood Drive, Johnston, IA 50131.
