Supervisors hear update from Community Family Resources

Katie Talbot of Community Family Resources for Wright County presented a report of their past year’s activities, along with a proclamation for Board action, at this week’s Supervisors meeting.

They approved and signed the proclamation declaring September as National Recovery Month.

In her report, Talbot noted that 127 individuals were served in the county over the past year. They recently went into the Belmond-Klemme middle school to speak to students on prevention. “The question for them was ‘Is it worth my career to make these choices?”, said Talbot. “We’re trying to intervene now before it happens to them (trying or addiction).” They are doing training on opioids and how to recognize signs of an overdose. “We have given out over $70,000 worth of kits for law enforcement to detect opioids,” said Talbot.

Her office is also seeing a rise in both meth and adolescent prescription drug use. They also do gambling addiction prevention and have resources available for that.

“11.7 percent of the state budget is spent on substance abuse and prevention,” said Talbot. “We’re working hard to lessen the costs.” The drug takeback program is working well, with National Guard members helping out in place of law enforcement in that effort as needed.
