School board discusses enrollment and hears education report from principals

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Board of Education met for their monthly meeting Monday night. The board discussed a variety of issues including enrollment and heard from all the schools’ principals.

Dr. Bob Olson explained that official numbers reveal that the district enrollment is down 1.13 students. (The fraction is due to certain students being weighted differently). Olson noted that the actual number of students physically attending the district’s schools is down by 17 students but that students who open enroll from the district and go elsewhere count toward its enrollment as well.

The enrollment numbers became important as the board discussed the facility report. Olson noted that since enrollment is not growing, building a new middle school is not in the near future. However, work continues on the design of a middle school to become “shovel ready” if the district does see the growth.
