Safety First; Wright County Farm Bureau and Wright County ISU Extension hold Safety Day Camp
The rain held off just long enough on Thursday, Sept. 12, for roughly 200 Wright County third graders to learn all about safety in nine different sessions.
While every parent does their best to warn kids about hazards of the water, electricity, fire, weather, animals and more, it’s a common known fact that sometimes these lessons can be easily forgotten as they are perhaps all too used to hearing mom and dad talk about what they should and shouldn’t do. Parents also realize that sometimes children just listen better to the cautions of other people - like teachers, doctors, and other professionals like the people of Wright County Farm Bureau and the Wright County ISU Extension office, which is precisely why they have been holding a Safety Day for third graders for more than a decade.
Wright County Farm Bureau and Wright County ISU Extension hosted once again hosted this year’s event at Greenwood Park. Students from Eagle Grove, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, and Belmond spent the day learning about water safety, electrical safety, first aid, pet safety, fire prevention and safety, chemical and farm safety, weather warnings/alerts and how to react and take cover, and how to get out of a smoke-filled room. They were also able to learn what it is EMS workers do and how they and the rest of the ambulance crew can help you in times of emergencies.
Throughout the course of the day, the kids were split into eight different sections according to their class and school. In 20 minute increments, they listened to presenters and many times participated in hands-on activities as they learned about each of the topic areas.
