Nissen farm awarded Environmental Leader Award

The family farm of Jon and Mary Nissen was among the dozens of farms across the state to be recognized with the Iowa Farm Environmental Leader Award at the Iowa State Fair on Wednesday, August 14.

Created in 2012 by the State of Iowa, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, and the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, the award recognizes Iowa farmers that go above and beyond with their voluntary efforts to protect the environment. Whether it's planting cover crops or converting ground into wetlands, these families have put extra effort into preventing soil erosion and improving water quality in the state.

"We know that protecting water is not a one time thing, but our way of life," said Governor Kim Reynolds. "Each of you are true leaders in this effort, showing others how thriving agriculture and effective environmental stewardship can work side-by-side."
