Makerspace to be created at C-G-D high school library

When Kristina Moore took over the librarian position at Clarion-Goldfield-Dows High School, she noticed that the spacious library was a place where students gathered during free time to study and relax. But last fall, she realized it could potentially be something more.

At the Area Education Agency’s librarian’s conference, Moore learned about Makerspace, an area put aside to allow students access to tools, electronics, and materials, in order to exercise creativity and allow for hands-on learning. Rather than being guided by a teacher, the Makerspace is designed to let students pursue projects that interest them, whether that’s programming, building machines, or even having new materials to make art.

To test if Makerspace would be a good fit, Moore checked out some robotics equipment available through the AEA. It was a hit. “Everyone was super engaged and excited,” she said. “I wanted to get those materials here permanently.”

To that end, Moore created a donor page through donorschoose.org. The site allows community members to support a classroom or classroom project, donating as little or much as they want to help. Moore’s goal is to raise $1,345, which will go toward items like a “build-your-own video game” kit, circuits and robotics kits, a 3D pen, art materials, and more.

Six local individuals as well as the Greenbelt Chapter of Whitetails Unlimited have already donated toward the project.
